The performance statistics that you obtain by using the Performance tool indicate that the com puter is experiencing a shortage of memory. The acceptable level of Pages/sec is under 20. At the current average rate of 107 Pages/sec, the operating system is spending a lot of time mov ing data in and out of physical memory and the paging file. Also, the % Disk Time statistic indi cates a potential hard disk performance issue (67 percent, with an acceptable threshold of 50 percent). The hard disk could be a problem, but it is more likely that the increased paging is causing the hard disk to work much harder than it has to. Increasing the amount of memory in the computer decreases the load on the hard disk, which will most likely cause the % Disk Time counter to drop below the acceptable threshold. It is not surprising that the computer began to have performance problems after the operating system was upgraded. Windows XP requires a higher level of resources than Windows 98. Memory that was previously unused by the Windows 98 operating system and that was available for applications is now being used by Windows XP .

You receive a call from a user who reports that his computer seems to run more slowly than it used to. Upon further questioning, you suspect that the problem may not be hardware-based, but that the user probably needs to optimize the performance of his hard disk. What three actions would you suggest to the user for optimizing his hard disk before resorting to using the Performance tool to measure the computer s perfor mance

13 Installing a Windows Desktop Operating System (1.0)
The Installing a Windows Desktop Operating System objective domain focuses on the installation and upgrading of the Microsoft Windows XP operating system. The exam covers three installation types: attended installation, unattended installation, and a Windows operating system upgrade. As a desktop support technician (DST), you must understand how to install Microsoft Windows XP using the best method for your organization or the method the user requests. You should be comfortable installing the operating system when a user is available to answer setup configuration questions, such as Time Zone and Computer Name. Conversely, by using the unattended installation features available, you should be able to install the operating system when no one is available to answer the setup questions. Lastly, in many situations you will need to upgrade older Microsoft operat ing system versions to Windows XP Professional. You must be able to troubleshoot those installations that fail by evaluating the boot sequence and reviewing log files. The Windows XP operating system is a robust and powerful operating system that con tains many features. The first step in working with any operating system is being skill ful in installing and configuring the system. Troubleshooting an operating system is a lot easier if you are aware of how to install all components.
Tested Skills and Suggested Practices
The skills that you need to successfully master the Installing a Windows Desktop Oper ating System objective domain on the Supporting Users and Troubleshooting a Microsoft Windows XP Operating System exam include the following:
Perform and troubleshoot an attended installation of a Windows XP operating system.
