As a desktop support technician (DST), you will be required to support printers that are on a network. Many help calls are made each day when users are not able to print their documents. Companies still rely on hard copy documents to function, and con necting an individual printer to each workstation in an organization is cost prohibitive. To solve this problem, printers are connected to workstations or servers and shared with network users. Permissions may be granted to users that allow them to print, remove print jobs that have been queued, and manage printers that are added or removed from the network. As a DST, you will typically support users that are experiencing printer problems, but you will not manage printers and the permissions assigned to them. You should still have a basic understanding of the components of printing and the permissions that can be assigned to users so that you can troubleshoot and assist users experiencing printer problems. To support computers that have Windows XP Service Pack 2 installed, you must understand how Windows Firewall can affect the ability to share printers. To answer the questions in this objective, you should know how local and network printers are installed on a workstation and how permissions can be issued. You should also know the importance of printer drivers and the effect a bad printer driver can have on printing.
