Notice that you still have not specified a table, view, or indexed view. You have not ref erenced any other object in the database, with the exception of a partition function. A partition scheme specifies a name for a physical storage structure. How does this work with the partition function from Lesson 1 The partition func tion, pf, had six partitions. Based on the definition, any values that reside in partition 1 will be stored in FG1, values in partition 2 will be stored in FG2, values in partition 3 will be stored in FG3, and so on.

What does a partition scheme define What are the requirements for creat ing a partition scheme A partition scheme defines a physical storage structure composed of one or more filegroups. The filegroups defined in the partition scheme must already be part of the database.

Filegroups can be leveraged for availability purposes. By architecting a database so that groups of objects are creating on different filegroups, you can recover a single filegroup without affecting any other portions of the database. By separating files to different disk drives, you can improve the disk I/O when data needs to be read from or written to disk. A partition scheme maps a partition function to a physical storage structure. Any object that uses the partition function stores its data within the associated parti tion scheme.
Lesson Review
You can use the following questions to test your knowledge of the information in Les son 2, Designing Filegroups. The questions are also available on the companion CD if you prefer to review them in electronic form.

Designing the Physical Database
1. Wide World Importers has had its main Imports database residing on a single local disk for the last two years. A recent close call has convinced management that additional hardware is required because the Imports database contains all customer information along with billing, human resources, shipping manifests, and shipment quotes. The storage on the database needs to be redesigned so that each functional area within the database can be restored while operations can continue with the remainder of the data. You need to maximize the fault tol erance while also minimizing administrative overhead. How should the storage be designed A. Create one filegroup that contains five files for customers, billing, human resources, shipping manifests, and shipping quotes. B. Create five filegroups on a single physical disk and place the objects for each of the five functional areas on separate filegroups. C. Create five filegroups, each on a different physical disk set, and place the objects for each of the five functional areas on separate filegroups. D. Create five filegroups, each containing five files. Place each file on a differ ent set of disks and place the objects for each of the five functional areas on separate filegroups.
Lesson 3: Planning Indexes
Lesson 3: Planning Indexes
Indexes are used to improve the performance of data requests. In a perfect world, you could create large numbers of indexes to satisfy every query permutation that a user would create. However, indexes must be maintained. As data is inserted, updated, and deleted, indexes need to be recalculated. The creation of indexes must be balanced so that you create enough indexes to improve queries while also ensuring minimal impact to data modifications.
