Choosing a CPU Architecture
The first decision to make when selecting a processor design for your new SQL Server 2005 database server is whether to use a 64-bit or a 32-bit system.

Memory Usage
One of the biggest advantages of 64-bit processors is the amount of memory that the processors can directly address. Both Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition and Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition can take advantage of the maximum memory supported by the host operating system. For all Microsoft Windows operating systems, the amount of RAM supported is greater in its 64-bit version than in its corresponding 32-bit ver sion. Table 1-3 provides a summary of these physical memory limits.
