Microsoft solutions framework (Msf) A collection of white papers and other documents that define the planning, development, and delivery processes for an application development or other IT process. Microsoft system Center Configuration Manager (sCCM) 2007 A software product that provides a comprehensive set of system and network management functions for Windows computers, including operating system deployment, software distribution, update management, remote administration, and hardware and software inventory. Microsoft visual basic scripting Edition (vbscript) A variant of the Visual Basic programming language that Windows administrators use to create scripts, particularly startup, shutdown, logon, and logoff scripts. monolithic gPO A type of Group Policy object (GPO) that contains all of the settings needed for a complete workstation configuration.

kerberos An authentication protocol that enables users to log on to an Active Directory Domain Services domain without transmitting passwords and other sensitive information over unsecured channels. kMs Key Management Services.

language pack A Microsoft operating system module that provides all of the localization code needed for an operating system to support a particular language. latency interval The time it takes to transmit data between two computers. Lite-Touch installation (LTi) A deployment methodology supported by Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2010 that enables administrators to install computers with a minimum of interaction.

MAk Multiple Activation Key. mandatory profile A read-only roaming user profile that provides workstations with a standardized desktop environment each time a user logs on.

multicast A type of IP communication that transmits data to multiple destinations simultaneously, conserving network bandwidth in the process.

program In System Center Configuration Manager 2007, a package component that contains the command that the target computers execute to install the application in a package.

network Monitor A graphical diagnostic application that captures samples of the data packets transmitted over a network and examines their contents.

quiet mode A command-line parameter that causes a program to execute without displaying any indications of its progress.

offline image A file-based image file that is not currently loaded into a computer s memory. online image A file-based image that is currently loaded into a computer s memory.

reference computer A computer that administrators use as a model from which to create customized Windows Imaging files. Remote Desktop Connection The Remote Desktop Services client program running on a workstation. Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) The communications protocol that connects the Remote Desktop Connection client to the Remote Desktop Session Host service on the Remote Desktop Services server. Remote Desktop services (RDs) A client/server application, implemented as a Windows Server 2008 R2 role, which provides clients with access to applications and entire Windows desktops. Formerly known as Terminal Services. Remote Desktop session host The core service running on a Remote Desktop Services server, hosting individual applications and full desktops. RemoteApp A Remote Desktop Services feature that delivers individual applications to clients in separate windows. Replica mode A Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) server deployment in which a WSUS server receives update approval data from another WSUS server in the organization.

package (system Center Configuration Manager) A software element, typically containing source files and programs, that SCCM distributes to clients on a network. Unlike Windows Installer packages, SCCM packages do not use a single file database format. package (Windows installer) A database file with an .msi extension that contains everything a computer needs to install and run a particular application. Not to be confused with package (System Center Configuration Manager). Ping.exe A command-line program that is the Windows version of a standard TCP/IP network testing tool that transmits a series of Echo Request messages by using a protocol called Internet Control Message Protocol. The computer receiving those messages then replies with a series of Echo Reply messages, which Ping.exe displays. Pre-boot Execution Environment (PxE) A hardcoded environment build into network interface adapters, which enables a computer to boot by downloading configuration data and startup files from servers on the network.
