The GPME provides one method for combining script languages by enabling you to execute a Windows PowerShell script either before or after your standard script. However, you can also call one script type from within another script. For example, you can create a batch file script containing a command that executes a VBScript or Windows PowerShell script. Before you can work with AD DS Group Policy objects on a Windows 7 workstation, you must download and install Group Policy Management Console. In this practice, you install GPMC and use it to create and edit a GPO.
E xE rcisE 1 Downloading and Installing GPMC
Microsoft provides GPMC as part of the Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7 package free of charge from the Microsoft Downloads Center. To download and install the package, use the following procedure.
Open a browser window and, in the address box, type the following URL and press Enter: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/ Linkid=130862. The Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7 download page appears. At the bottom of the page, click the Download button for the platform appropriate to your computer and save the amd64fre_GRMRSATX_MSU.msu or x86fre_GRMRSATX_ MSU.msu file to a folder on your local drive. In Windows Explorer, locate the file you downloaded and double-click it. A Windows Update Standalone Installer message box appears, as shown in Figure 4-24.

Click Yes to install the update. The Read These License Terms page appears. Click I Accept. The system installs the update, as shown in Figure 4-25, and then displays the Installation Complete page.

Click Close.
E xE rcisE 2 Enabling Group Policy Management
Before you can use GPMC, you must enable the tools you just installed.

Click Start, and then click Control Panel. The Control Panel window appears. Click Programs. The Programs window appears. Click Turn Windows Features On And Off. The Windows Features dialog box appears. Expand the Remote Server Administration Tools container and the Feature Administration Tools container, as shown in Figure 4-26.

Select the Group Policy Management Tools check box and click OK. Windows 7 enables the Group Policy Management Tools feature.

After you install and enable the Group Policy Management Tools feature, you can use GPMC to create a GPO.

Click Start, and then click Administrative Tools\Group Policy Management\. The Group Policy Management console appears. Expand the Forest and Domains containers. Then expand the container that represents your domain and select Group Policy Objects, as shown in Figure 4-27.

Right-click the Group Policy Objects container and, from the context menu, select New. The New GPO dialog box appears, as shown in Figure 4-28.

In the Name text box, type baseline and click OK. The Baseline GPO appears in the Group Policy Objects list.

Right-click the Baseline GPO you created and, from the context menu, select Edit. The Group Policy Management Editor appears, as shown in Figure 4-29.

Close the Group Policy Management Editor and Group Policy Management Console windows.
Lesson Summary
An enterprise workstation deployment typically has a baseline configuration that applies to all of the computers. This configuration might consist of standard applications, but typically also includes configuration settings that control features such as error reporting, auditing, and user profiles. An enterprise is likely to have differing requirements for various groups of workstations. Administrators might therefore have different configuration settings for each of the workstation images they maintain. Defining workstation configuration settings should begin early in the Plan phase of the deployment project and be subject to the same planning, testing, and deployment procedures as the rest of the project. Windows 7 now supports more than 2,500 settings that you can configure using Group Policy, including a large number of preference settings that formerly were configurable only by using scripts. You can write scripts using batch or command files, Windows PowerShell commands, or any scripting language supported by the Windows Script Host (WSH), including VBScript and JScript.
