Supporting TCP/IP
Lesson Summary
When configuring a DNS client in an environment in which there are DNS name servers, you can configure the client to obtain the address of the DNS server automatically from a DHCP server or you can manually enter multiple addresses for DNS servers. In the Advanced TCP/IP Settings dialog box, you can configure the way suffixes are added to queries.
Case Scenario Exercise
In this exercise, you will read a scenario about configuring TCP/IP on a client computer running Windows XP Professional, and then answer the questions that follow. If you have difficulty completing this work, review the material in this chapter before beginning the next chapter. You can find answers to these questions in the Questions and Answers section at the end of this chapter.
Scenario
You are working as an administrator for a company named Adventure Works, a leading supplier of skiing and snowboarding equipment. You are working with Andrew, a manager in the Engineering department who has recently made the decision to work several days each week from home. The company has provided Andrew with a new notebook computer that is running Windows XP Professional.
Questions
1. Andrew s notebook has a network adapter built-in. When he is at work, Andrew will connect the notebook to the company network. The company uses a DHCP server to provide IP addresses to computers on the network. How should you configure Andrew s computer to connect to the company network
2. When Andrew is at home, he will connect his notebook computer to a digital subscriber line (DSL) modem supplied by his ISP. The ISP has issued Andrew a static IP address. How should you configure Andrew s computer so that it will use the static IP address when he is at home without interfering with the DHCP service on the company network
