3. Select the type of network component that you want to install, and then click Add. 4. In the dialog box that appears, select the desired component and click OK, or click Have Disk to install a component that does not appear on the list. When you install a network component, the component becomes available to all connections automatically. You should disable components that are not used by a particular network connection. This process reduces the amount of network traffic generated on the connection, therefore increasing overall performance. To disable a component without uninstalling it, open the Properties dialog box for the network connection and clear the check box.

When a component is no longer required by any connection, you can uninstall it. Uninstalling a component removes it from all connections. To uninstall a network component, follow these steps: 1. Open the Properties dialog box of the network connection. 2. Select the network component that you want to remove. 3. Click Uninstall, and then click Yes to confirm the uninstall operation. Authentication The Authentication tab of the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box, shown in Figure 15-6, allows you to configure IEEE 802.1x authentication for a connection. The IEEE 802.1x standard allows authentication and access to 802.11 wireless networks and wired Ethernet networks. When a user wants access to services through a particular LAN connection, the connection adopts one of two roles: authenticator or supplicant. As an authenticator, the connection enforces user authentication before it allows user access. As a supplicant, the connection requests access to the services that the user wants access to. An authentication server checks the supplicant s credentials, and then lets the authenticator know if the supplicant is authorized to access the authenticator s services.

become unavailable. When authentication is enabled, you can choose from three types of authentication (referred to as EAP, or Extensible Authentication Protocol):
Smart Card Or Other Certificate MD5-Challenge Protected EAP (PEAP)
Authenticate As Computer When Computer Information Is Available This option specifies whether the computer attempts authentication within an Active Directory domain environment when a user is not logged on. This option requires that a computer account for the computer exists in the domain. Authenticate As Guest When User Or Computer Information Is Unavailable If a user account or computer account does not exist within a domain, this option allows the computer to attempt authentication as a guest. If you authenticate as a guest, the network infrastructure might limit the number of computers on the network that you can communicate with.
The Advanced tab of the of the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box allows you to configure Windows Firewall and ICS. These options are the focus of Lesson 4, Configuring Internet Connection Sharing (ICS), and Lesson 5 Configuring Windows Firewall.
Note
The New Connection Wizard
Although it is not hard to configure a network connection in Windows XP Professional manually, Windows does offer a wizard (the New Connection Wizard) that can perform much of the work of configuring a network connection for different uses. Understanding the options found in this wizard will help you configure connections efficiently. You can start the New Connection Wizard from the Network Connections window by clicking Create A New Connection. You can configure four types of connections by using the New Connection Wizard:
