The Shared Folders snap-in is included in Computer Management, and you can also add the snap-in to your own custom console. You monitor access to network resources to assess and manage current usage on network servers. It is important that you understand why you should monitor the network resources in your computer environment. Some of the reasons why it is important to assess and manage network resources are included in the following list: Maintenance You should determine which users are currently using a resource so that you can notify them before making the resource temporarily or permanently unavailable. Additionally, you might be able to detect current or impending problems. Security You should monitor user access to resources that are confidential or need to be secure to verify that only authorized users are accessing them. Planning You should determine which resources are being used and how much they are being used so that you can plan for future system growth. You can use Computer Management to monitor the resources on the local computer or a remote computer.

Who Can Monitor Access to Network Resources
Not all users can monitor access to network resources. Table 17-1 lists the group membership requirements for monitoring access to network resources using Computer Management.

Members of the Domain Administrators or Server Operators domain groups can use Computer Management to monitor any computer that is a member of the domain. Members of the Administrators or Power Users local group can monitor a local computer, whether that computer is in a workgroup or domain.
How to Use the Shares Folder to View and Monitor Shared Folders
You use the Shares folder in Computer Management (located within System Tools\Shared Folders) to view a list of all shared folders on the computer and to determine how many users have a connection to each folder. In Figure 17-1, the Shares folder has been selected in the Computer Management console tree, and all the shared folders on that computer are shown in the details pane.

Windows XP Professional does not update the list of shared folders, open files, and user sessions automatically. To update these lists, on the Action menu, click Refresh.
Real World
Monitoring Multiple Remote Computers Easily
The Microsoft Management Console (MMC) allows you to add multiple snap-ins that can connect to different remote computers. If you routinely monitor shared folders and users on several different remote computers, you can create a custom console that lets you switch between those computers easily. To create a custom console for monitoring multiple remote computers, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, and then click Run. 2. In the Run dialog box, type mmc, and then click OK. Windows XP displays an empty MMC console named Console 1. 3. Click File, and then click Add/Remove Snap-In. 4. In the Add/Remove Snap-In dialog box, click Add. 5. In the Add Standalone Snap-In dialog box, in the Available Standalone SnapIns list, click Shared Folders, and then click Add. 6. In the Shared Folders dialog box, click Another Computer, and then type the name of the remote computer (or click Browse to locate the computer on the network). 7. Repeat Steps 5 and 6 for each computer you want to add to the console.
