There are two ways to extend battery life in mobile computers: enhance battery technology and decrease power utilization. The vendors of batteries have been slowly improving their products since mobile computers were first introduced, but the greatest gains over the past few years have come from making mobile computer hardware and software more energy-efficient. Advanced Configuration Power Interface (ACPI) allows computers running Windows XP Professional to use electricity more efficiently than previous technologies. Windows XP Professional supports the ACPI for sophisticated power management. Windows XP Professional also supports the older and less-effective standard Advanced Power Management (APM). On an ACPI system, power consumption is determined by the power settings configured in the Power Options, the requirements of running services and applications, and the capabilities of the installed hardware. To put it another way, Windows XP Professional fully supports the ACPI standard, but applications and hardware must be designed to work with ACPI and Plug and Play for the power management system to be as effective as possible. To successfully answer questions in this objective, you must know how to create, modify, and select power schemes. You need to know how to enable and disable hibernation; and how to configure power alarms, Standby mode, and advanced power settings. You must be able to install, configure, and troubleshoot PC Cards. You need to be able to unplug or eject hardware from the taskbar.

You have installed Windows XP Professional on your laptop computer. You often carry the laptop around your company s campus while working, and periodically have to leave it unattended for extended periods of time. You do not want to drain the battery at all during these times, but you also do not want to close all your applications and shut down Windows XP. What do you do Choose the correct answer. A. Shut down the computer. B. Enable Hibernation in the Power Options program in Control Panel. Then create a power scheme that causes the laptop computer to hibernate whenever the computer is not used for a suitable period of time. C. Use the Power Options in Control Panel to create a custom power scheme. D. Use the Power Options in Control Panel to select the Max Battery power scheme.

Under which of the following scenarios do you not see the APM tab in the Power Options program located in Control Panel Choose two correct answers. A. The APM-based basic input/output system (BIOS) is failing. B. The computer s BIOS is ACPI-compliant. C. The external Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) is not properly connected to the serial port of the computer. D. The computer s battery has been improperly charged. E. The computer s BIOS is not APM-based.
A user in your organization has installed Windows XP Professional on his notebook computer, which supports APM. When the user tries to shut down the computer and it freezes during the shutdown process, pressing the power button does not resolve the problem. He has to unplug the computer and remove the battery to completely shut it off. How do you check to see whether the APM-based BIOS is the cause of the problem Choose the correct answer. A. Restart the computer and run Acldiag.exe. B. Install a new copy of Windows XP Professional so that the APM-based BIOS can be properly detected and installed. C. Restart the computer in safe mode and disable as many of the power management options as possible. D. Turn the computer on and, after the desktop has appeared, run the Apmstat.exe tool from a command prompt.
