Zone transfers can be blocked at the DNS server so that only authorized addresses or networks can perform this function. The following error is returned if zone transfer security has been set:
*** Can t list domain <example>.: Query refused
Lesson 1
Using DNS Troubleshooting Tools
Exam Tip For the exam, you need to remember that the Ls command simulates a zone transfer, and that zone transfers are restricted by default in Windows Server 2003. To query a Windows Server 2003 DNS server with the Ls command, be sure to allow zone transfers to the computer on which you are running Nslookup.
Viewing the DNS Events Log
You can view the DNS Events log by using the Event Viewer node in the DNS console, as shown in Figure 6-3. You can also view this same log in the Event Viewer console, where it is named the DNS Server log.
Figure 6-3
Viewing the DNS Events log
The DNS Events log records DNS server errors. If you are having problems with DNS, you can check Event Viewer for DNS-related events.
Configuring the DNS Events Log
By default, the DNS Events log records all DNS events. However, you can restrict the type of events written to the log either through the Event Logging tab of the DNS server properties dialog box or through the properties dialog box of the DNS Events log itself. The DNS Events Properties dialog box allows greater management control and filtering features. To open the DNS Events Properties dialog box, right-click the DNS Events log in the DNS console, and then select Properties. The DNS Events Properties dialog box con tains a General tab and a Filter tab. The General tab, shown in Figure 6-4, allows you to configure the log filename, log file location, log file maximum size, and expiration date of logged events.

The Filter tab, shown in Figure 6-5, allows you to restrict events written to the DNS Events log by event type, event source, event ID, date, and other parameters.

DNS Debug Log
In addition to the DNS Events log, the DNS Server service also maintains a separate log used for debugging. This DNS debug log is a file named Dns.log that is stored in the WINDOWS\System32\Dns\ folder. Because the Dns.log file is actively used by the DNS Server service, you can view this file only after the DNS Server service has been stopped. In addition, because the native format of the Dns.log file is Rich Text Format (RTF), you should use WordPad to view all of its contents properly. By default, the DNS debug log contains only DNS errors. However, you can also use it to capture all DNS packets sent or received by the local DNS server. To enable DNS packet logging, open the DNS server properties dialog box and click the Debug Log ging tab. By default, the Log Packets For Debugging check box is cleared and the rest of the tab is unavailable. However, after you have selected the Log Packets For Debugging check box, as shown in Figure 6-6, you can configure which DNS packets you want captured to the DNS log.

Using the Debug Logging tab, you can configure the DNS log file to record the follow
