Note This procedure describes how to configure a publishing rule for inbound SMTP traffic. To send SMTP messages to other servers on the Internet, you must also configure an access rule that allows SMTP traffic from the SMTP servers on your internal network to the External network.

SMTP Application Filter
ISA Server 2004 provides application-layer filtering to help prevent Internet attackers from using buffer-overflow commands to disable or take control of your computer running Exchange Server. The SMTP application-layer filter inspects the commands included in all incoming SMTP communications. You can configure the SMTP filter to limit the size of the SMTP command sequences as well to block specific commands.
SMTP Message Screener
The ISA Server 2004 SMTP Message Screener can be used to control incoming SMTP mail by performing application-layer inspection of all SMTP messages. The Message

Screener can scan the messages and examine the attachments and then block or hold messages for later inspection. You can configure the SMTP Message Screener to block or hold incoming or outgoing e-mail using the following parameters:
Source or destination e-mail domain Source or destination e-mail address Attachment size, file extension, or file name Keywords in the mail subject or body
The SMTP Message Screener can block or hold messages sent from the internal network in the same way that it does for messages entering the network.
Note All the options for securing SMTP e-mail are available regardless of which SMTP server you use in your organization. You can use Microsoft Exchange Server in this situation, or you can use any other SMTP server.
How to Configure the SMTP Application Filter
To make an Exchange Server computer accessible to other SMTP servers on the Internet, you must configure a publishing rule that publishes the Exchange Server computer using the SMTP port. When you configure a rule that uses SMTP, the SMTP application filter is enabled for that rule automatically. The SMTP application filter accepts the traffic, inspects it, and forwards it to internal SMTP servers only if the SMTP filter allows it.
What Is SMTP Command Filtering
SMTP servers use a set of commands (also called verbs) to initiate an SMTP connection between servers and then to transmit SMTP messages. The SMTP application filter filters SMTP traffic by examining these SMTP commands. The SMTP commands supported by most SMTP servers are listed in Table 9-1.
Table 9-1 Supported SMTP Commands
SMTP Command HELO EHLO MAIL FROM RCPT TO
Command Function Sent by an SMTP client or server to identify itself, usually with a domain name. Used by an SMTP server to identify its support for Extended Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (ESMTP) commands. Identifies the sender of the message; used in the form MAIL FROM:. Identifies the message recipients; used in the form RCPT TO:.

Table 9-1
Supported SMTP Commands
Command Function These commands are used to download messages from an SMTP server that has queued messages sent to a domain name. TURN does not require any security, ATRN requires authentication, and ETRN can confirm the requesting server s identity based on IP address. Provides a mechanism by which the SMTP server can indicate the maximum-size message supported. Provides the ability to send a stream of commands without waiting for a response after each command. An ESMTP command that replaces the DATA command. This command sends a BDAT command with an argument that contains the total number of bytes in a message. The receiving server counts the bytes in the message and, when the message size equals the value sent by the BDAT command, the server assumes it has received all of the message data. Sent by a client to initiate the transfer of message content An ESMTP command that enables delivery status notifications Nullifies the entire message transaction and resets the buffer Verifies that a mailbox is available for message delivery on the destination server Returns a list of commands that are supported by the SMTP service Terminates the session
