The most secure option is to require a secure connection from ISA Server to the clients and from ISA Server to the OWA server. This option allows HTTP application filtering on the computer running ISA Server and secures the network traffic both on the Internet and on the protected network. 6. On the Specify the Web Mail Server page, type the name or IP address of the OWA server. Click Next. 7. On the Public Name Details page, ensure that This Domain Name (Type Below) is configured in the Accept Request For drop-down list. In the Public Name box, type the URL the users will use when connecting to the ISA Server computer and click Next. 8. On the Select Web Listener page, select or create a Web listener. If you are requiring secure connections with clients, the Web listener must be enabled for SSL. Click Edit. 9. On the User Sets page, choose which users can access the OWA server. Because only domain users can have mailboxes on an Exchange Server computer, you should choose the All Authenticated Users user set. Click Next. 10. On the Completing the New Mail Server Publishing Rule Wizard page, click Finish.

When users try to access OWA, they will be forced to authenticate by the Exchange Server computer. You can also enable authentication on the ISA Server computer and use any of the available authentication methods. The most secure option for enabling authentication for an OWA publishing rule is to configure the Web listener to use OWA forms-based authentication. Forms-based authentication ensures that the user credentials are not cached on the client computer after the user logs off, or after a time-out period expires. In addition, OWA forms-based authentication can be used to restrict whether users can view or download e-mail attachments.

If you choose not to use OWA forms-based authentication but still want to enable authentication on the ISA Server computer, the best option is to use basic authentication with SSL. When you configure the Web listener used by the OWA Web publishing rule to use basic authentication, you can also configure the Web publishing rule to forward the basic authentication credentials to the Exchange Server computer. By doing this, users will be asked to authenticate once rather than authenticating for both ISA Server and Exchange Server. However, if you use Basic authentication, then you must use SSL to encrypt network traffic; if you don t, all network traffic will be sent in clear text.
When a user logs on using OWA forms-based authentication, the user password is never sent across the network in clear text. Rather, a session cookie is created and stored on the OWA client computer. This cookie stores the OWA user credentials in an

encrypted format. When the user logs off from OWA, the cookie is cleared and it is no longer valid for authentication. This means that if a user logs off OWA, no one else can access the mailbox without being asked to authenticate.
Important
Exchange Server 2003 also enables the option of using forms-based authentication when connecting to OWA. You cannot enable forms-based authentication on both the Exchange Server 2003 and ISA Server. On the other hand, Exchange 2000 Server and Exchange Server 5.5 do not support forms-based authentication, but you can configure formsbased authentication on ISA Server when publishing these Exchange Servers.
You can also limit how long the credentials are stored if the user does not log off. The automatic time-out is valuable for keeping a user mailbox secure from unauthorized access. For example, if you do not use forms-based authentication, or use an alternate authentication method, the user credentials on the client computer will be valid as long as the Web browser session is open. This means that if the Web browser is not closed, another user could reconnect to the user s mailbox without being asked for authentication credentials. Although this time-out does not completely eliminate the risk of an unauthorized user accessing an account if an Outlook Web Access session is left running on a public computer, the time-out greatly reduces this risk. Another option that is enabled with forms-based authentication is the option to prevent users from opening or saving attachments. You can configure attachment blocking for public computers, private computers, or both. Blocking attachments, particularly on public computers, is recommended.
