When an Outlook MAPI client from the Internet connects to a computer running Exchange Server through ISA Server, the RPC application filter works as follows: 1. The Outlook client issues a request over TCP Port 135 through ISA Server to the computer running Exchange Server to find the service port number associated with the Exchange RPC UUID. 2. The computer running Exchange Server sends a response back with a port number on which the client can communicate. The response includes all the UUIDs and associated port numbers that the client will use to connect to the required Exchange services. 3. ISA Server uses the RPC application filter to capture this information, and maintains it in a table. ISA Server allocates a new port on the ISA Server computer, and changes the response that it sends to the Outlook client to reflect this change. This information is also maintained in the table. 4. The Outlook MAPI client establishes a connection to the MAPI ports that ISA Server instructed it to use. ISA Server screens the RPC commands to ensure that no exploits are contained within the channel. 5. Information sent by the Outlook MAPI client is forwarded by ISA Server to the computer running Exchange Server. 6. The computer running Exchange Server responds to the Outlook MAPI client and ISA Server intercepts the responses. The RPC filter screens these responses and changes the source port number. 7. ISA Server forwards the responses to the Outlook MAPI client.

Configuring an Outlook RPC Publishing Rule
To configure an Outlook RPC publishing rule on ISA Server, complete the following procedure: 1. In the ISA Server Management Console, click Firewall Policy. 2. On the Firewall Policy task pane, on the Tasks tab, select Publish A Mail Server to start the New Mail Server Rule Wizard. 3. On the Welcome To The New Mail Server Publishing Rule Wizard page, type a name for the rule, and then click Next. 4. On the Select Access Type page (shown previously in Figure 9-1), click Client Access: RPC, IMAP, POP3, SMTP, and then click Next. 5. On the Select Services page, shown in Figure 9-13, select Outlook (RPC), and then click Next.

6. On the Select Server page, type the IP address for the published Exchange Server computer, and then click Next. 7. On the IP Addresses page, click External, and then click Next. 8. On the Completing The New Mail Server Publishing Rule Wizard page, review the configuration, and then click Finish. 9. After you configure the Outlook RPC publishing rule, you can also configure the rule to accept connections only from Outlook clients that are configured to use encryption. To do this, right-click the Outlook RPC publishing rule and click Configure Exchange RPC. Select Enforce Encryption.

When you use the Mail Publishing Wizard to create an Outlook RPC publishing rule, the publishing rule enables access to the Exchange Server computers using the Exchange RPC Server protocol. To examine the protocol configuration, open the Properties for the publishing rule. On the Traffic tab, notice that the Exchange RPC Server protocol is listed and then click Properties. On the Parameters tab, shown in Figure 9-14, notice that the protocol is configured to allow inbound connections on Port 135, and that the RPC Filter is applied to the protocol.
