What Is RPC over HTTP
With the newest versions of Exchange Server and Outlook, you can enable access to Exchange Server for Outlook clients using RPC over HTTP, which provides all the benefits of using an Outlook client without needing multiple ports open on the firewall. Users running Outlook 2003 can connect directly to a computer running Exchange Server 2003 over the Internet by using HTTP or HTTPS, even if both the computer running Exchange Server and Outlook are behind firewalls and located on different networks. Only the HTTP and HTTPS ports need to be opened on the firewall.

Although the official name for this feature is RPC over HTTP you should , never consider implementing it over HTTP Always use HTTPS to secure the network traffic sent . from the Outlook client to the ISA Server computer.
RPC over HTTP is usually deployed using front-end and back-end servers. The frontend server is an RPC proxy server that converts the RPC over HTTP packets into normal RPC packets, which are forwarded to the back-end computer running Exchange Server. The back-end server replies to the front-end server, which converts the response back into HTTP packets and replies to the client. In this case, the RPC proxy server need not be running Exchange Server. RPC over HTTP can also be deployed in a single server configuration where the Exchange Server is also configured as the RPC proxy server.
Important You should not configure the ISA Server computer as the RPC proxy server because to do so you would need to install IIS on the server. Moreover, the access rule configuration would be quite complex.
When you enable RPC over HTTP, only Port 80 or Port 443 need be accessible from the Internet. You can configure ISA Server to publish the RPC proxy server, so that all RPC over HTTP requests are forwarded to the RPC proxy sever. To enable this, you configure a Web publishing rule, or a secure Web publishing rule, on ISA Server that publishes the RPC virtual directory on the RPC proxy server.

How to Configure RPC-over-HTTP Connectivity
Before configuring ISA Server to publish the RPC over HTTP proxy server, you must configure the computers running Exchange Server and the Outlook clients to support RPC over HTTP. Then you can create secure Web publishing rule to publish the \Rpc virtual directory on the RPC proxy server through ISA Server.
Configuring Exchange Server 2003 for RPC over HTTP
When you deploy RPC over HTTP, you must configure a computer running Windows Server 2003 as an RPC proxy server. The RPC proxy server accepts the RPC over HTTP or HTTPS connections and translates them into regular RPCs. In a scenario in which you have deployed Exchange Server front-end and back-end servers, the Exchange Server front-end servers should be configured as RPC proxy servers. The high-level steps to configure Exchange Server 2003 for RPC over HTTP are as follows: 1. Configure the Exchange front-end server as an RPC proxy server by adding the RPC over HTTP subcomponent to the Windows Networking Services component. If you have Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1 installed, then use Exchange System Manager to configure the server as an RPC front-end server. 2. Configure the Authentication Method in the RPC virtual directory in IIS to use Basic authentication. Also configure the virtual directory to require SSL connections. 3. Modify the registry on the RPC proxy server and global catalog server to use specified port numbers. To communicate with the domain controllers and computers running Exchange Server, the RPC proxy server specifies which ports to use for communicating with the domain controllers, global catalog servers, and all the computers running Exchange Server with which the RPC client must communicate.
