Most of the VPN client access configuration is managed using the Configure VPN Client Access dialog box in ISA Server Management. When VPN clients connect to the VPN server, they must be assigned an IP address configuration that allows them to access the resources on the internal network or other networks. This IP address configuration can be assigned by ISA Server directly, or you can use a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server to assign the addresses. ISA Server supports multiple authentication protocols for VPN clients. You can enable one of or all the authentication protocols. To obtain the most secure network, you should enable only the most secure protocols that are supported by your remote-access clients. After ISA Server is configured to enable client access, VPN connections need to be configured on the remote-access clients. The exact steps to enable VPN connections will vary, depending on the client operating system. Troubleshooting VPN access to ISA Server 2004 requires a thorough understanding of the ISA Server configuration and the authentication methods and tunneling protocols. All these components and options must be configured correctly to allow users to connect to the ISA Server using a VPN. A VPN is often a cost-effective and secure alternative to using a dedicated WAN connection between company locations. Configuring a Site-to-Site VPN
Configuring a site-to-site VPN is more complex than configuring VPN client access because ISA Server does not include a default remote-site network such as the VPN Clients network. This means that you must configure all the remote site network properties and configure access rules for traffic flow between the networks. In addition, you must configure both sides of a site-to-site VPN connection. When you configure site-tosite VPNs, you need to configure the components listed in Table 10-2. Table 10-2 Site-to-Site VPN Configuration Components
Explanation ISA Server supports several tunneling protocols. You need to choose the appropriate protocol based on your organization s security requirements and the VPN gateway servers that you will deploy in each site. To enable site-to-site VPNs, you need to create a remote-site network on ISA Server. All the client computers in the remote site are located in this network. You can use this network when applying rules to limit access to other networks. Configuration Components Determine the tunneling protocol to use

Configuring Virtual Private Networks for Remote Clients and Networks
Table 10-2 Site-to-Site VPN Configuration Components
Explanation When a remote VPN gateway server connects to ISA Server, the remote server is treated like any other VPN client. This means that you must enable VPN client access to enable site-to-site access. Because ISA Server uses the remote-site network just like it uses any other network, you need to configure access settings on ISA Server to enable clients at one site access to resources in another site. You can use access rules or publishing rules to make internal resources accessible to remote office users. Once you have configured ISA Server in one of the sites, you also need to configure the VPN gateway server in the other site. This gateway server could be another computer running ISA Server, a computer running RRAS on Windows Server, or a thirdparty VPN gateway server. The exact configuration of this server will depend on the type of server used in the remote site.
