One of the significant improvements to the ISA Server Management Console is the improvement to the monitoring functionality. You can use the ISA Server Management Console to monitor several components on the ISA Server computer. The monitoring options are listed in Table 11-1.

Monitoring Components Explanation Alerts Monitors ISA Server for configured events and then performs actions when the specified events occur. The alert service is configured with many events that are monitored by default. You can also configure additional alert definitions and define the events that occur when the alert is triggered. Provides information on all the current client sessions on ISA Server. ISA Server lists sessions of the following types: Firewall client, secure network address translation (SecureNAT) client, virtual private network (VPN) client, VPN site-to-site, and Web Proxy client. Provides detailed information about the Web proxy, Microsoft Firewall service, or Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) Message Screener. ISA Server logs all client connections and all blocked client connections by default. You can use the logs to monitor the activity on ISA Server in real time, or you can review saved log files. Summarizes information about the usage patterns on ISA Server. For example, you can create reports that summarize information about the users who access the most sites through ISA Server and what sites are accessed, as well as information about what protocols and applications are used most often. You can also use reports to monitor the security of your network. For example, you can generate reports that track malicious attempts to access internal resources.

Monitoring Components Explanation Connectivity Enables regular monitoring of connections from the ISA Server computer to any other computer or Uniform Resource Locator (URL) on any network. For example, you can use connectivity options to monitor connections to domain controllers, DNS servers, published Web servers, and external Web servers. This feature provides advance warning when the connection to any required service or network fails. Collects performance data on the computer running ISA Server. You can monitor server performance in real time, create a log file of server performance over a longer period for detailed analysis, or configure performance alerts to create an event as a result of counters reaching certain values.

The Dashboard view in ISA Server Management Console displays a summary of the information that is available for real-time monitoring in ISA Server. The interface is shown in Figure 11-1. Most of the nodes in the Dashboard display a summary of the information that is available on the other views under the Monitoring node. The Dashboard nodes are described in Table 11-2.

Description Displays a summary of the status of the connectivity verifiers on the ISA Server computer. To configure the connectivity verifiers, access the Connectivity view on the Monitoring pane. Displays a summary of which services are started on the ISA Server computer. To manage the services, access the Services view. Display a list of reports that have been generated on the ISA Server computer. To open the reports, access the Reports view. Displays a summary of the alerts on the ISA Server computer. To view the actual alerts, access the Alerts view. Displays a summary of all the client sessions connected to the ISA Server computer. For more details on which clients are connected, access the Sessions view. Displays the Allowed packets/sec and the Blocked packets/sec performance counters on the ISA Server computer. This provides a real-time view of how much network traffic is passing through or being blocked on the ISA Server computer. For more detailed performance information, use the Performance Console.
