By default, almost all the ISA Server alerts only write events to the Windows event log. If you want to receive the alert in any other way, or if you want to shut down the ISA Server services if an alert occurs, you must modify the existing alert definition. The only alerts that are configured to stop the ISA Firewall service are alerts that would prevent the ISA Server from logging connections.

If you configure an SMTP server located on the internal network, you must enable the system policy rule that allows the Local Host network to access the internal network using the SMTP protocol. In the System Policy Editor, in the Remote Monitoring configuration group, select SMTP and then click Enable. The Allow SMTP protocol from firewall to trusted servers rule , is enabled. If you configure an e-mail action to use an external SMTP server, you must create an access rule that allows the Local Host network to access the external network (or the network on which the SMTP server is located), using the SMTP protocol.

Configuring New Alert Definitions
To configure a new alert definition, complete the following procedure: 1. In the ISA Server Management Console, click Monitoring and then click the Alerts view. 2. In the Task pane, click Configure Alert Definitions. 3. To add an Alert Definition, click Add in the Alerts Properties dialog box to open the New Alert Wizard. When you configure a new alert definition, you must do the following:
Provide an Alert name. Choose a specific Event and additional condition that will trigger the alert. You cannot add any event that is already configured as an alert and that does not have any additional conditions. Assign the Category and Severity level for the alert that you are configuring. These options provide a way to group together alert instances in the Alerts view according to category type and severity level.
