Use the following questions to help determine whether you have learned enough to move on to the next lesson. If you have difficulty answering these questions, review the material in this lesson before beginning the next lesson. You can find answers to these questions in the Questions and Answers section at the end of this chapter. 1. You are the network administrator at the branch office of your company. ISA Server 2004 is installed as your Internet-edge firewall. You have configured the alerts on the ISA Server computer to send an e-mail to your e-mail account at an Internet service provider (ISP). What else must you do to receive the e-mail notifications

2. You have deployed ISA Server 2004. You have configured ISA Server alerts to notify you through your e-mail account whenever a security-related alert is raised. However, you discover that you are receiving too many e-mail messages. For example, on one weekend, you received several dozen e-mail messages about the same type of attack that was successfully blocked by ISA Server. You need to decrease the number of e-mail messages you receive about the same types of attacks. However, you do need to receive an e-mail when a new type of attack is detected, and you need to be notified if a specific type of attack continues. What should you do a. Configure ISA Server to increase the threshold limit for the events associated with network attacks. b. Configure ISA Server to raise additional alerts only after a specified period. c. Configure ISA Server to raise additional alerts immediately. d. Configure ISA Server to raise additional alerts only if the alert has been manually reset. 3. You have configured a script to run with a set of user credentials when an alert threshold is reached. Later you discover that the alerts are triggering, but that your script is not running. What is the most likely cause

An alert is a notification of an event or action that has occurred on ISA Server. When the event occurs, an alert is triggered according to the conditions and trigger thresholds specified for the event. You can view the alerts in the ISA Server Management Console in the Alerts view of the Monitoring node. An alert definition lists the specific actions or notifications that occur when an event takes place on the computer running ISA Server. Alert events define actions that occur on the computer running ISA Server that can raise alerts. Alert conditions are additional criteria applied by ISA Server when alert events occur. You can also define the actions that will occur after the alert is triggered. Many of the ISA Server alerts are used to report on detected intrusions attempts. You can configure the intrusion detection alerts to shut down the ISA Firewall Service. You can manage all alerts in the Alerts view of the Monitoring Node in ISA Server Management Console.
Lesson 3
Configuring Session and Connectivity Monitoring
11-29
Lesson 3: Configuring Session and Connectivity Monitoring
ISA Server 2004 provides the ability to monitor real-time information about the current sessions open on the server. Session monitoring provides information on all clients that are connected to the ISA Server. You can also enable ISA Server to monitor connections with other servers on the internal network or on the Internet by configuring connectivity monitors. This lesson describes how to configure and manage session monitoring and connectivity monitoring on ISA Server.
After this lesson, you will be able to
Define session monitoring Implement session monitoring Define connectivity monitoring Implement connectivity monitoring
Estimated lesson time: 30 minutes
What Is Session Monitoring
You can use session monitoring to identify the users or computers that are connected to the ISA Server computer. These clients may be internal SecureNAT, Firewall, or Web Proxy clients, or they may be Internet clients connected to an internal Web resource, or through a VPN connection. Session monitoring provides real-time information about the client sessions. This information is accessible on the Session view of the Monitoring node in the ISA Server Management Console, as shown in Figure 11-8. The type of information that is presented includes the following:
Activation This column shows the date and time that the session has been established. Session Type This column shows the type of session that has been established. Session types include SecureNAT, Firewall Client, VPN Client, VPN Site-To-Site, and Web Proxy. Client IP This column displays the IP address of the client initiating the session. This column displays the network from which the session has
