ISA Server, Enterprise Edition, can also optimize the ISA Server deployment in a branch-office scenario if you require multiple ISA Server computers in each branch. In this scenario, you can take advantage of NLB for site-to-site VPNs. In addition, you can implement CARP for the branch office array, for the main office array, or both. In this scenario, the ISA Server computers at the main office can be deployed as domain members, while the branch office ISA Server computers can be in the same domain as the main office: in a child domain, in a separate domain with trust between the domains, or in a workgroup. In a branch-office scenario, you can also deploy a Configuration Storage server in each branch office so that the ISA Server computers can always access a local copy of the ISA Server configuration. When you deploy an ISA Server array in a branch office, you need to consider how to connect the branch office computers to the main office so as to access the Configuration Storage servers required to install the ISA Server computers. ISA Server provides secure site-to-site VPN functionality between the locations, however, that functionality cannot be provided to the branch before ISA Server is installed. ISA Server provides several options for deploying the first ISA Server computers in the branch office.

Because the ISA Server enterprise configuration information is stored in the Configuration Storage server directory, it is critical that you plan the Configuration Storage server implementation carefully. You have the following options when planning your Configuration Storage server deployment:
Deploy a single Configuration Storage server to manage the entire enterprise. You must deploy at least one Configuration Storage server to create an ISA Server enterprise. If you deploy only one server, that server will be used by all ISA Server computers when requesting configuration information.
Lesson 2
Planning an ISA Server 2004 Enterprise Edition Deployment
12-23
Deploy multiple Configuration Storage servers in the same enterprise. You can also deploy multiple Configuration Storage servers. In this configuration, each server will store the configuration information for the entire enterprise, but you can configure each array to use a different Configuration Storage server to obtain configuration updates. You can also deploy the Configuration Storage servers across multiple offices. ADAM multiple-master replication means that you can perform updates on any Configuration Storage server and the changes will be replicated to all other servers. Deploy multiple Configuration Storage Servers in different ADAM sites. If your organization has multiple locations and you are deploying Configuration Storage servers in each location, you can create multiple ADAM sites for each location. When you create a site, you can configure how frequently replication occurs between the sites. You can use this option to manage the bandwidth between organization locations. Install the Configuration Storage server in a domain or workgroup. You can deploy Configuration Storage server in either a domain or workgroup. If you deploy Configuration Storage server in a workgroup, you can deploy only one server in your ISA Server enterprise and will need to use certificates to authenticate between the ISA Server computers and the Configuration Storage server. If you deploy the Configuration Storage server in a domain, you can use domain authentication and deploy multiple servers. Install the Configuration Storage server as a dedicated server. You can install Configuration Storage server on a dedicated server that does not have any other ISA Server components installed on the server. Install the Configuration Storage server on a server also running ISA Server. You can also install Configuration Storage server on a computer that is also running the ISA Server services. In this configuration, the server can operate as a firewall as well as a Configuration Storage server.
