Prepare for the Exam
13 Planning and Installing ISA Server 2004 (1.0)
The old adage measure twice, cut once applies to the installation of any network infrastructure. When dealing with the important areas of network security that ISA Server 2004 addresses, proper care in the planning process is even more important. Implementing a well-thought-out plan will produce far better results for your organization than a more ad hoc installation of ISA Server 2004. One of the first questions you need to address is, What problems are we trying to solve by implementing ISA Server 2004 You should have a thorough understanding of the current environment and how ISA Server 2004 will fit into that environment. The last thing you want is to discover that some heretofore unknown mission-critical application on the network suddenly broke the moment your new ISA Server 2004 installation became active. You should ensure that the hardware on which you install ISA Server 2004 is appropriate. Plan ahead and assume that the load on the ISA Server will only increase over the coming years. If you spend a little more on provisioning a server now, you re likely to save the organization more money in the long run. A well-provisioned server is less likely to need replacement in several years than one that currently meets only the minimum specifications. Finally, your choice of whether to implement ISA Server 2004, Standard Edition, or Enterprise Edition will depend very much on the feature set your organization requires. For the most part, the products are very similar, but there are several advantages to the Enterprise Edition that are worth the extra licensing cost if you know that you will be able to implement them effectively.
Testing Skills and Suggested Practices
The skills that you need to successfully master the Planning and Installing ISA Server 2004 objective domain of Exam 70-350, Implementing Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2004, include:
Planning and Installing ISA Server 2004.
Practice 1: Install and configure a virtual machine using Microsoft VirtualPC. You have the option of using a separate computer to do this, but most candidates find it easier to use virtual machines for practice labs rather than having separate computers. A 45-day evaluation version of VirtualPC can be obtained from http://www.microsoft.com/virtualpc/. The virtual machine that you create should have three separate network adapters and should run the evaluation version of Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition. If you do not have the Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition evaluation version, you

can obtain it from Microsoft by visiting http://www.microsoft.com/ windowsserver2003/evaluation/trial/evalkit.mspx. Label one network adapter EXTERNAL and give it the IP Address 10.10.10.1, subnet mask 255.255.255.0. Label the second network adapter PERIMETER and give it the IP address 172.16.10.1, subnet mask 255.255.255.0. Label the third network adapter INTERNAL and give it the IP address 192.168.10.1, subnet mask 255.255.255.0.
Practice 2: On the computer you installed in Practice 1, install the SMTP component of Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0. Once this is completed, install the evaluation version of ISA Server 2004. Be sure when installing to correctly designate the external interface of the server as the network adapter named EXTERNAL. Practice 3: Perform a packet capture on your network using the Network Monitor utility. Make a note of the different protocols in use. While the packet capture is in process, navigate to a Web site and check your e-mail. See what impact this has on the protocols captured by Network Monitor.
