Managing Hardware Devices and Drivers
Lesson Summary
Device Manager lists all detected devices and indicates problems with device identification or driver configuration. Device and driver configuration can be printed using Device Manager or exported to a CSV file using the Driverquery command. Users can connect and install any PnP device for which a signed driver exists on the system. If driver installation requires any user interaction, a user will not be able to install a device. Interface access points to device and driver configuration can be disabled through policies in local or domain-based GPOs. Unsigned Driver Installation behavior has three settings: Ignore, Warn, and Block.
Lesson 2
Configuring Hardware Devices and Drivers
10-11
Lesson 2: Configuring Hardware Devices and Drivers
Devices might require updated drivers due to changes in the Windows Server 2003 operating system or changes in the way that a vendor programs a device to function. Drivers can be updated through Device Manager. If an updated driver does not perform as expected, Device Manager allows you to remove the updated driver and return to the previous driver. This rollback feature is accessible through the Properties page of the device. Occasionally, the automatic resource configuration managed by Windows Server 2003 is insufficient to accommodate a unique pattern of device use on a particular computer. If a device requires static resources (IRQ, I/O Port, DMA, or Memory Range), you can use Device Manager to disable Automatic Settings in favor of a specific configuration.
After this lesson, you will be able to
Use Device Manager to update, roll back, and uninstall drivers Use Device Manager to analyze and configure resource use by devices
Estimated lesson time: 15 minutes
Updating Drivers
You can update most device drivers using Device Manager. The driver update procedure is a manual one, whether the device is PnP or not, and must be performed at the console of the computer or through Remote Desktop by an administrator, assuming that users have not been granted elevated privileges.
Note Driver updates delivered through Group Policy, Windows Update, Microsoft Update, Software Update Services (SUS), or Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) do not require administrative credentials for installation. See 9, Maintaining the Operating System, for more information about the SUS, WSUS, Windows Update, and Microsoft Update.
