A site link is an Active Directory object that represents the physical connectivity between two or more sites. For replication to occur between sites, you must establish a link between the sites. There are two components to this link: the actual physical connection between the sites (usually a WAN link) and a site link object. The site link object determines the protocol used for transferring replication traffic (IP or SMTP) and governs when replication is scheduled to occur. All sites contained within the site link are considered to be connected by means of the same network type. You must manually link sites to other sites using site links so that domain controllers in one site can replicate directory changes from domain controllers in another site. You can use a single site-link object to control more than a single pair of sites. For example, if your network consists of four sites that all use the same proto col, are connected with the same type and speed WAN link, and should follow the same schedule, you can configure a single site-link object to connect all the sites. Also, if there is more than one WAN connection between two sites, you need to create only one site link because you cannot assign a site link to a specific connection. If the network is more complicated than this, where connections of different types and speeds are used, you ll need to create separate site links to handle the different types of connections. When possible, though, group the WAN links of the same speed by creating a single WAN link for them.

Site links are transitive by default.
If you disable site link transitivity for a transport, all site links for that transport are affected and become nontransitive. You must then create site-link bridges (covered in the next section) to provide transitive connections. Site-link bridges are logical connections that use site links as their underlying transport. When site-link transitivity is enabled, these logical site link bridges are automatically created between all sites. When site-link transitivity is disabled, you must create the site link bridges yourself. Figure 5-5 shows a simple set of four sites that are connected via site links in a round-robin fashion. If site-link transitivity is disabled for these sites, you need to create site link bridges manually to ensure that all the sites can replicate. Basi cally, you ll have to use site-link bridges to ensure that all sites have a replication path to all other sites whenever site-link transitivity is disabled. Think of it this way. When site-link transitivity is enabled, all site links are bridged so that all sites can replicate to one another. When transitivity is disabled, you must create the bridges yourself, because the only sites linked are those with an actual site link configured between them. A site-link bridge forwards replication traffic between connected sites across multiple site links.
