It is recommended that you choose and register a unique DNS domain name for your organization. This name will be a second-level domain within one of the top-level domains used on the Internet. Table 6-2 shows some of the top-level domains you may be able to choose from.

For example, a second-level domain could be contoso.com. Once you decide on your parent domain name, you can create subdomains based on the location or organizational name within the company. For example, namerica.contoso.com could be a subdomain name at your organization. Another subdomain could be added, such as sales.namerica.contoso.com.

DNS Namespace Design with Active Directory
Before you can implement a DNS namespace properly, the Active Directory structure must be available. Because you have already finished designing your Active Directory structure, you are now ready to support it with the proper DNS structure. Active Directory domains are named with DNS names. The names you choose to use for your Active Directory domains should start with the DNS domain suffix your orga nization reserved for use on the Internet, such as contoso.com. This can be combined with geographical locations or divisional names in your organization form created earlier. Your map should have already identified the following:
Whether the local area network (LAN) is separated into subnets. This information can be used when deciding on the zones you may wish to create and the zone transfer method you will select, and it may help you to decide whether a subdo main should be created.

Designing a DNS Structure
The location of routers, and all services that they provide, as well as firewalls and proxy servers. This will assist you in securing DNS resources. Later, you will see how a router or firewall can filter traffic on particular ports to increase security. Next, you should review the document information for each subnet on the network you created. If you recall, this document described the network identity (ID), subnet mask, and ranges of hosts on the subnet, DHCP, and DNS configura tions. This can be used to determine the amount of users on the network or in a particular location, and will help in your DNS server placement.
Interoperability with Active Directory, DHCP, and WINS
When designing your DNS name resolution strategy, you should plan to integrate other networking services to optimize performance. In this section, you look at how Active Directory integration can improve network performance and lessen administrative overhead. You also see how DHCP not only automatically configures your client workstations with IP configuration information, but also communicates with DNS Server service to perform dynamic updates. Last, you will examine WINS and how DNS can be optimized to forward queries to a WINS server to resolve Network Basic Input/Output system (NetBIOS) names and services. Let s begin with Active Directory integration.
Active Directory Integration
As you learned in 1, Active Directory is the tool used to manage, organize, and locate resources on your network. DNS Server service is integrated into the design and implementation of Active Directory, making them a perfect match.
Installing Active Directory
When you add the Domain Controller role to a server and there is no authoritative DNS server for the domain, you are prompted to install DNS Server. This is necessary because a DNS server is required to locate the domain controller you have just installed with Active Directory, as well as other domain controllers in the Active Directory domain. You are also prompted to install DNS if your current DNS infrastructure does not support DNS dynamic updates. As you saw in the previous lesson, one advantage of integrating DNS with Active Direc tory is the ability to replicate zones without having to store the text files on a DNS pri mary server. Let s look in more detail at the benefits of using Active Directory integration:
Any domain controller running the DNS Server service can be designated as the primary source for a zone and can update a zone. In other words, there is not one primary DNS server, as in the standard primary zone methodology, which can be a single point of failure for a network. For example, if the primary DNS server goes down, no client updates to the database can be made because the secondary
