If you ve heard it once, you ve heard it a thousand times: More memory improves performance. That especially holds true for DNS servers. In fact, adding more RAM to your DNS server produces the most noticeable improvement in perfor mance. When the DNS Server service starts, it loads all of its configured zones into memory. Approximately 4 megabytes (MB) of RAM is used by DNS, even if there are no zones present. Each addition of a zone or a resource record con sumes additional memory. Each resource record uses approximately 100 bytes of memory.

It is always better to have as many servers as possible when you are designing your DNS infrastructure. If 1000 users are all trying to connect to one DNS server so they can resolve an FQDN, it goes without saying that the process will be slow. Load balancing is accomplished by providing clients with varied ordered addresses of multiple DNS servers. Load balancing improves scalability, allowing your DNS servers to handle many more simultaneous requests than would otherwise be possible. As shown in Figure 6-8, configuring clients to first query a DNS server on their local subnet adds the benefit of improved responsiveness.

Remote Locations
The worst nightmare for a network administrator is to have users complaining that the system is too slow. If your remote users have to go over a high-latency or overloaded WAN link to access your DNS server, you may consider using caching-only servers.
Exam Tip
As you work through the case studies presented on the exam, be particularly aware of topology diagrams that depict slow WAN links between various locations. Avoid topologies that require replication across a slow link. Instead, choose topologies that use caching-only servers in remote locations connected to the central network using a slow link.
As you can see, one of the most important aspects of designing your DNS infrastructure is having the correct amount of DNS servers on your network, and placing them in the areas that optimize performance and offer fault tolerance, load balancing, and enhanced security measures.
