On local networks without routers configured, B-node client workstations can resolve NetBIOS names using broadcast packets. Hence, a WINS server is not required for the subnet. However, if too many users are resolving NetBIOS names using this method, broadcast traffic over the LAN can affect the overall network performance. To reduce this broadcast traffic, WINS is one of the best solutions. Another solution is configuring all of the workstations with an Lmhosts file that has the NetBIOS names and IP address mappings of all of the network resources. This is also effective, but can be time consuming and fraught with errors.

Lesson 3 Practice
1. Sketch a diagram of the solution you would propose as a WINS replication strategy for Northwind Traders. What are the benefits of this strategy
Although a number of replication strategies might work, the best solution based on the given scenario is shown in the following diagram. This strategy ensures that each location has two WINS servers, a design that provides a level of fault tolerance in case any single WINS server in a location should fail.

Designing a WINS Structure
Lesson 3 Review
1. You are designing a WINS replication strategy for two subnets. What questions should be asked when making a determination of whether or not a WINS server should be a push or a pull partner
The most important question to ask when determining the partner type in a replication strategy is the bandwidth available between the subnets in question. If there is a limited bandwidth, you might consider configuring both servers as pull partners, each scheduled to pull information from one another s WINS database at a designated time. This replication could take place late in the evening, when very little traffic is traversing the WAN link.
2. List the three ways a push partner notifies its pull partner to update its WINS database.
The three ways a push partner notifies its pull partners are: WINS server starts, an IP address change occurs for one of its NetBIOS name-to-address mapping changes, or a certain threshold has been reached, such as a particular amount of changes to the WINS database.
3. You are the administrator of a large enterprise network and receive a phone call from a junior network administrator working at one of your branch offices. The administrator is responsible for several WINS servers and says that he deleted over 25 obsolete records from his database, but that they keep reappearing the next day. How would you explain this occurrence to the administrator What steps can the administrator take to ensure that the records are permanently removed from all WINS servers
Your response to the administrator would be that a simple deletion only deletes records from the local WINS server database. The replication process is replacing the deleted records; he should perform a tombstone delete, which will replicate the deletion to all WINS servers.
