In designing your remote access infrastructure you want to be sure your network access server is performing optimally and that each of the hardware components of the server is also optimized. Let s look at the components and the recommended configu rations of each.
Network Interface Cards If your network requires a 100-Mbps bandwidth, and the Remote Access Server interface is connected to the public network, set all devices to 100 Mbps Full duplex and connect all interfaces on the private network to a high-capacity switch. You should also use network adapters capable of IPSec hardware offload on the public network if you determine that processing capacity will limit performance. Processor For optimal performance, it is better to double the processor speed than to double the amount of processors. If you do have a multiprocessor com puter, bind one processor to each network adapter card.

Random Access Memory (RAM) As usual, the more the better. If you do not need to handle more than 1,000 concurrent connections, 512 MB of RAM will suf fice. For every 1,000 concurrent calls, provide an extra 128 MB of RAM over the recommended RAM capacity for the server and add an additional base of 128 MB more for remote access and related services. For example, a dedicated remote access server with the recommended RAM capacity of 256 MB, which will need to support 2,000 simultaneous VPN calls, should have 768 MB of RAM:
256 MB + (128 MB * 2) + (128 MB * 2)
If compression is turned on, each connection uses more nonpaged pool memory and requires more processing. Performance can be improved by turning off compression.
Design Requirements
Before you can decide on the remote access design you will use for your company, you should be able to identify:
The needs of the users How many users will need to access the company s resources remotely Where are they currently located Will the present network infrastructure support any new requirements The type of connection being used between geographic locations. Will you need to upgrade a 56-Kbps line to a T1 line to accommodate increased usage Current network infrastructure What are the locations of the routers, switches and data links Will newer routers need to be purchased to handle increased loads The current network traffic patterns Are there potential bottlenecks in the current design that can easily be improved upon Any mission-critical applications running on the remote access network If yes, does the speed of the data transmission, or the network proto col used by the application program, affect the successful operation of the appli cations For example, if the application was for hotel reservations and it ran on a legacy NetWare 4.11 server that relied on Internetwork Packet Exchange/ Sequenced Packet Exchange (IPX/SPX) protocol, would your users be able to con tinue using the program over a remote connection Another major factor is whether the maximum network latency is acceptable to run the mission-critical application. If a user in Boston needs to connect to a VPN server in Redmond to use an application hosted on a server on the internal network in Boston, then the round-trip will have to cross the country four times. This latency may cause the program to fail. Determining the network latency require ments ahead of time allows the designer to specify that a VPN server in the Boston area is necessary.
