DHCP relay agent Forwards DHCP messages between DHCP clients and DHCP servers on different IP network segments. DHCP scope A range of IP addresses to be managed by the DHCP server. DHCP scope options are assigned to a DHCP scope to provide IP configuration options that are particular to a specific IP address range. DHCP server Provides automatic IP configuration to other IP devices on the network. DHCP servers are configured with a range of IP addresses and other DCHP scope options. A DHCP server grants a DHCP client a lease for an IP address for a specific length of time. directory An authoritative source of information that contains information about people, resources, or other objects. directory service Both the directory information database and the services that con trol the database and make it available across the network. distinguished name A name assigned to every object in Active Directory that iden tifies where the object resides in the overall object hierarchy. DNS See Domain Name System.

DNS notify list A list maintained by the primary master for a zone of other Domain Name System (DNS) servers that should be notified when zone changes occur. The notify list is made up of Internet Protocol (IP) addresses for DNS servers configured as secondary masters for the zone. When the listed servers are notified of a change to the zone, they will initiate a zone transfer with another DNS server and update the zone. DNS server A computer that runs DNS server programs containing name-to-IP address mappings, IP address-to-name mappings, information about the domain tree structure, and other information. DNS servers also attempt to resolve client queries. A DNS server is also called a DNS name server. domain The core unit in Active Directory. A domain is made up of a collection of computers that share a common directory database. domain controller A server running Microsoft Windows 2000 Server or Microsoft Windows Server 2003 that has Active Directory installed. Each domain controller is able to authenticate users for its own domain. It holds a complete replica of the domain naming partition for the domain to which it belongs and a complete rep lica of the configuration and schema naming partitions for the forest. Domain Name System (DNS) A widely used standards-based protocol that allows clients and servers to resolve names into IP addresses and vice versa. Windows Server 2003 extends this concept by supplying a dynamic DNS (DDNS) service

that enables clients and servers to automatically register themselves in the database without requiring administrators to define records manually. domain restructure A migration method that involves the redesign of the Windows NT domain structure, which often results in fewer, consolidated domains. domain tree A collection of domains with a contiguous namespace, such as microsoft.com, dog.microsoft.com, and cat.microsoft.com. Domains within the forest that do not have the same hierarchical domain name are located in a differ ent domain tree. When different domain trees exist in a forest, it is referred to as a disjointed namespace. domain upgrade The process of upgrading an existing Windows NT domain struc ture without restructuring the domains. Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) A TCP/IP protocol that provides automatic configuration of IP addresses on network devices. dynamic update An updated specification to the Domain Name System (DNS) standard that permits hosts that store name information in the DNS to dynamically register and update their records in zones maintained by DNS servers that can accept and process dynamic update messages.

fault tolerance The resistance of a computer or operating system against downtime when a failure occurs. firewall A system designed to prevent unauthorized access to or from a private network. A firewall can be made up of hardware, software, or a combination of both. Firewalls can work by blocking certain types of packets or certain applications. forest A collection of domains and domain trees. The implicit name of the forest is the name of the first domain installed. All domain controllers within a forest share the same configuration and schema naming partitions. The first domain within the forest cannot be removed. forest root domain The first domain created in an Active Directory forest. After the forest root domain has been created, you cannot create a new forest root domain
