Domain Name System (DNS) provides a method for mapping computer names to Internet Protocol (IP) addresses in a distributed database. This lesson introduces you to DNS and how it is used on a Windows Server 2003 network.

Name Resolution
As you ll learn in Lesson 3, computers on a Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP-) based network are uniquely identified using an IP address. IP addresses are decimal representations of long binary numbers; a typical IP address is 192.168.132.103. Even though the decimal representations are easier to deal with than the binary numbers they represent, they are not so easy for people to remember and work with. Computers on a TCP/IP network are called hosts and are also given unique, simplelanguage host names to identify them. An example might be the host name mailserver. People find it much easier to work with names, but the routing protocols in TCP/IP work with IP addresses. Name resolution is a process that brings host names and IP addresses together. Name resolution is the process of resolving a host name to an IP address. When a user or application searches for a host name, the name resolution service used on the network is queried. The service looks up the host name, matches it to an IP address, and returns the IP address to the computer where the user or application needs it. IP rout ing takes over from there and make sure the data goes where it needs to go. There are a number of name resolution services in use today, including:
HOSTS files Still in use on some networks, HOSTS files are a predecessor to DNS and are files with static mappings of hostnames to IP addresses. LMHOSTS files In the early days of Microsoft networking, a different computer name called a NetBIOS computer name was used to name computers on the network. NetBIOS names represented an alternative to hostnames. LMHOSTS files tracked NetBIOS names and IP address mappings.

Domain Name System (DNS) DNS is the standard name resolution service used on the Internet. It has also become the resolution service of choice on Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003 networks and is tightly integrated with Active Directory Services. Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS) WINS is a database-driven service that tracks NetBIOS names and IP addresses. WINS was in prominent use in ver sions of Windows prior to Windows 2000, but its use has dropped sharply due to the adoption of DNS as the primary name resolution service in Windows.
Exam Tip Understand the evolution of name resolution services in Windows. HOSTS files were largely replaced by DNS for mapping host names. LMHOSTS files were largely replaced WINS for mapping NetBIOS names. DNS is now the system of choice (being tightly integrated with Windows Server 2003 and Active Directory) and is supplanting WINS.
