Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is an industry standard protocol that lets a server automatically assign IP addresses to clients. This saves the administrative burden of manually assigning IP addresses and other TCP/IP information. Using DHCP is faster and more reliable than manual assignment; it also prevents the introduction of networking errors due to mistyped information. DHCP is actually a pretty simple mechanism, especially when compared to something like DNS. On the server end, you configure a range of IP addresses that a DHCP server is allowed to assign to clients; this range is called a scope. You also must specify a subnet mask and a default gateway address to be assigned. Optionally, you can include other TCP/IP information, such as DNS and WINS server information. On the client end, you simply tell a client that it should obtain its IP address and other information automatically (the default option for most Windows-based clients). Whenever TCP/IP loads on a client computer, a message is broadcast to the local IP subnet looking for DHCP servers. Any DHCP server that receives the request and has a valid scope of IP addresses responds with an offer of configuration. When the client receives and accepts an offer of configuration, it configures itself with the IP address and other information provided by the DHCP server. This process is called leasing (the client leases an IP address from the server). A lease has a time limit, after which the lease expires if it has not been renewed by the client. When the lease is 50 percent through its duration, the client attempts to renew the lease by contacting the leasing server. If successful, the lease is renewed for the full duration. If unsuccessful, the client continues to contact the leasing server until the lease expires. If the lease expires, the IP address is returned to the pool of IP addresses in the server s scope.

Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA) is a feature introduced with Windows 2000; it is also included in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. APIPA allows a computer that is configured to obtain an automatic IP address to assign itself an address from a private range should no DHCP server be available. APIPA assigns addresses in the range 169.254.0.1 through 169.254.255.255 a range reserved by Microsoft for just this purpose. APIPA is really designed for small networks that don t use a DHCP server. APIPA allows computers running Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, or Windows XP to plug into a network and recognize one another with little configuration neces sary. If your network uses a DHCP server and you see that a client has been assigned an address in the APIPA range, it means the client could not locate a DHCP server.

The following questions are intended to reinforce key information presented in this lesson. If you are unable to answer a question, review the lesson materials and try the question again. You can find answers to the questions in the Questions and Answers section at the end of this chapter. 1. In which of the four layers of the Internet protocol is the routing of packets between source and destination hosts handled a. Application b. Transport c. Internet d. Link 2. Your company has registered the network ID 131.107.0.0, which uses the default subnet mask 255.255.0.0. You would like to create a custom subnet mask that allows you to divide that network into the maximum number of subnets that would allow you to have at least 20 hosts per subnet. What custom subnet mask would you use
