A domain tree is a hierarchical arrangement of domains that share a contiguous namespace. The first domain you create in a tree becomes the tree root domain and any domain you add to the tree becomes a child of that root. Determining whether a forest needs multiple trees is actually not too complicated a process. There is really one overriding reason why you would want to use multiple domain trees, and that is if you need to support multiple DNS namespaces in a forest. As such, using multiple trees also represents a good way to merge separate forests to take advantage of a common schema and global catalog, yet maintain separate namespaces. Figure 3-5 shows two separate namespaces in two separate trees.

Using two trees to facilitate separate namespaces

Although you may come up with other reasons to use multiple trees in a forest in real life, there is only one good reason to make use of multiple trees on the exam: You require more than one DNS namespace.
Although the decision to use multiple trees is based on the necessity for distinct namespace (and therefore a decision that pretty much makes itself), there are some disadvantages to using multiple trees that you should be aware of. These disadvantages include the following:
Because each tree requires a separate DNS name, the IT staff is responsible for maintaining more DNS names than are needed for a single-domain model. More trees mean more domains because each tree must have at least one domain. Therefore, all the issues concerning the use of multiple domains apply. Non-Microsoft lightweight directory access protocol (LDAP) clients may not be able to perform a global catalog search and instead may need to perform a sepa rate LDAP search within each tree. This decreases the perceived response time for the client.
With these disadvantages in mind, it is worthwhile to consider whether it is a viable alternative to consolidate the namespace and use a single tree with different domains instead of using multiple trees. Although some loss of namespace distinction occurs,

the benefits might outweigh this loss. Figure 3-6 shows the same environment from Figure 3-5 reorganized into a single tree.

Using Multiple Forests
A forest is a group of one or more domain trees that do not form a contiguous namespace but share a common schema, directory configuration, global catalog, and automatic two-way transitive trust relationships between domains. There is always at least one forest on a network, and it is created when the first domain controller on a network is installed. The first domain created becomes the forest root domain. Forests represent the ultimate security boundaries. No administrative control or user access is possible between forests unless the permission is explicitly configured. This configuration happens using a type of trust new to Windows Server 2003 named the forest trust, which is used for managing the security relationship between two forests. This new feature simplifies cross-forest security administration by allowing all domains in one forest to trust all domains in another forest through the use of transitive trust rela tionships. However, the forest trust is not transitive at the forest level. In other words, if one forest trusts a second, and the second forest trusts a third, the first forest does not automatically trust the third forest. You should also be aware that the use of forest trusts requires that both forests be raised to Windows 2003 functional level, which means all domain controllers in both forests must be running Windows Server 2003. By and large, you should strive to avoid using multiple forests if at all possible. Nonethe less, there are a few situations for which you might need to implement multiple forests. These situations include:
