In DNS, names are arranged hierarchically and build as you move from parent domains to child domains. For example, a domain named contoso.com might have a child domain named sales.contoso.com. That domain, in turn, might have a child named europe.sales.contoso.com. Each domain is named according to the full path of domain names that identifies it in the DNS hierarchy all the way up to the root domain (iden tified by a period). Active Directory follows the DNS naming convention. When you create the first Active Directory domain, it becomes the root domain for the forest and the root domain for the first domain tree in that forest. That root domain begins the namespace. Each domain you add under that root gets its name from its parent domain and the hierarchy it fits into. All Active Directory domain names are identified by a DNS name as well as by another name called a Network Basic Input/Output System (NetBIOS) name, a legacy naming system used on earlier Windows systems and still supported in Windows Server 2003. Unlike the hierarchical DNS naming structure, NetBIOS uses a flat namespace; each resource on the network (domains, computers, and so on) has a single name that can be resolved to an IP address. When you install Windows and name a computer, it is a NetBIOS name you are supplying. Windows automatically generates a NetBIOS name for each service running on a computer by appending the computer name with an extra character. Domains are also given a NetBIOS name.

Planning an Active Directory Structure
With the advent of DNS as the primary naming system for Active Directory, NetBIOS names have taken on a secondary importance. However, NetBIOS names are still supported and used. DNS simply uses the computer name as the relative distinguished name and appends the DNS domain hierarchy to create the fully qualified domain name. The following is an example of NetBIOS and DNS names that are given to the same domain:

Generally, the NetBIOS name is the same as the first naming component in the DNS name. However, a NetBIOS name can be only 16 characters in length, and the last char acter is reserved to specify the type of NetBIOS service. Each name in the DNS naming convention can have up to 64 characters, which means DNS names longer than 15 characters cannot be used as NetBIOS names without being truncated. During installation, you can configure each name to meet your needs. This means that you can specify a NetBIOS and DNS name that are different for a single domain. However, keep in mind that a good design should preclude this option just because having more than one name for a single entity is bound to be confusing. If you are creating a new Active Directory design, create DNS names that fit the NetBIOS naming conven tions (i.e., limit DNS names to 15 characters). If you are creating a design for an exist ing network in which DNS names are used that don t comply with NetBIOS naming conventions, though, you do have the option to use different names. The problem with this approach is mainly a possibility of introducing confusion for the managers and users of the network. If you are forced to use different names, you should at least make sure that the names are similar enough to avoid confusion.
