One possible solution is to use a regional domain model and dedicated forest root domains. For the Northwind Traders corporate forest (CORP), five domains are required one empty root domain and four regional domains. For the R&D forest, only one domain is required.

The reasons for using multiple domains are: to implement different domain-level security poli cies (password or account policies, for example), to provide decentralized administration with greater local administrative control, to optimize replication traffic over WAN links to a greater degree than sites allow, to distinguish between locations or departments in the namespace, to retain an existing Windows NT 4.0 domain structure, or to put the computer serving as schema master in a different domain than those hosting resources.

The reasons for using a dedicated forest root domain are that the domain administrators in the forest root can regulate membership in the Enterprise Admins and Schema Admins universal groups more easily; that it is better isolated from changes to a company s structure; and that the forest root domain is smaller (because it does not house other resources), so you can more easily replicate it across the enterprise to provide fault tolerance.

Planning an Active Directory Structure
3. What is the primary reason for using multiple domain trees on a network What are the disadvantages
Pretty much, the only reason to use multiple trees in a forest is when you need to support mul tiple DNS namespaces. There are two primary disadvantages, which include having to maintain extra DNS resources and having to support more domains.
4. What are the reasons you might need to implement multiple forests
Forests represent the ultimate security boundaries. No administrative control or user access is possible between forests unless the permission is explicitly configured. For this reason, you can use multiple forests to: support multiple, separate companies; provide administrative autonomy; and create an isolated unit.

Lesson 2 Review
1. Describe the components of distinguished names, relative distinguished names, and canonical names, and explain how they are generated.
Distinguished names identify an object globally; they contain the common name of the object, the common name of the object s parent containers, and the domain information. Relative dis tinguished names identify an object within a parent container; they contain only the common name of the object itself. Canonical names work like distinguished names (in that they identify an object globally), but have a different syntax. All three names are generated automatically by Active Directory based on the common name of the object and its parent containers.
2. What is the difference between DNS and NetBIOS domain names
The DNS namespace is a hierarchy, whereas the NetBIOS namespace is flat. NetBIOS names support the legacy naming resolution in Windows. DNS names can be up to 64 characters, but NetBIOS names can only be 15 characters.
3. You are deciding how to create a namespace for a company that has the registered DNS name proseware.com. The company is connected to the Internet and hosts several services that are available to the Internet. What two options do you have for building the namespace with regard to the registered DNS name
Your first option is to use the registered DNS name proseware.com as the root domain name for the Active Directory structure. Your second option is to use a subdomain of proseware.com (such as sales.proseware.com) as the root domain name.

4. You are planning a network in which there are two domains that hold user accounts. You notice that each domain has a user named Keith Harris. You do not want to violate the naming convention that you have set up for the organization, which would result in both users being given the principal name kharris. Based on this situation, which of the following statements is true a. You can do this with no manual intervention. b. You can do this, but you will have to manually change the relative distin guished name of the user object. c. You can do this, but you will have to manually change the distinguished name and canonical name of the user object. d. Active Directory does not allow two users with the same name to be created in the same forest.
