By default, child containers inherit Group Policy from their parent containers. However, you can override inherited settings by placing different settings directly on the child object. Within a GPO, you can also specify that a particular setting is enabled, dis abled, or not configured. Settings that are not configured for the parent container are not inherited at all by the child container. Settings that are enabled or disabled are inherited as such. If GPOs are configured for both a parent and a child, settings in the GPOs are com bined if the settings are compatible. For example, a setting on the parent OU that calls for a certain password length and a setting on the child OU that calls for a certain

The General tab of a GPO s Properties dialog box has options to disable unused com puter and user configuration settings in the GPO. Most policies use only a fraction of the available settings. Since all settings in all policies must be processed, requiring a computer to process unconfigured settings requires unnecessary system resources. By disabling the unused settings, you can ease the load on client computers having to process the policy.

No Override When you link a GPO to a container, you can configure a No Override option that prevents settings in the GPO from being overridden by settings in GPOs linked to child containers. This provides a way to force child containers to conform to a particular policy. Block Inheritance You can configure the Block Inheritance option on a con tainer to prevent the container from inheriting GPO settings from its parent containers. However, if a parent container has the No Override option set, the child container cannot block inheritance from this parent.

These two options create powerful exceptions to the inheritance rule, but you should resort to using them only in rare circumstances. It is much better to create a solid Group Policy design using OUs that places Group Policy where it needs to be instead of creating a system of exceptions that can be difficult to keep track of.

Exam Tip
In questions that deal with Group Policy, keep the rules of inheritance in mind. Also remember how Group Policy is combined: First, the local GPO is applied, then the domain, site, and OU GPOs. Finally, remember that GPOs cannot be linked directly to users, groups, or to Built-in containers. GPOs can be linked only to a site, domain, or OU.
Filtering GPOs with Permissions
One potential problem with group policy can arise when you want to, for example, link a GPO to an OU that has 500 users and 20 groups and you don t want to have the settings applied to all of those people.
Lesson 3
Designing a Group Policy Implementation
4-37
To prevent a policy from applying to either a user or a group, you can change permis sion settings for those users. Two permissions are needed for a policy to apply: the Read permission on the policy (because logically, if you cannot read a policy, then you cannot apply it) and the Apply Group Policy permission (which speaks for itself). The way to prevent a user or group from having a policy applied is to change permissions so that you deny the ability to read or apply the policy in question.
Planning a GPO Structure
Group Policy is implemented by first creating GPOs and then linking them to sites, domains, and OUs. Although some GPOs may need to be applied at the domain or site level, the majority of GPOs should be applied at the OU level.
