Group Policy lets you apply settings to many user and computer objects at once. You can use Group Policy to deploy and update software to client computers, configure and enforce Windows settings, and distribute registry settings using Administrative Templates. When planning Group Policy, you need to determine what settings need to be deployed to clients and the best way to go about that. You can link GPOs to domains, sites, and OUs. GPOs linked to domains and sites should be kept to a minimum. Most GPOs should be linked to a well-planned OU structure. You should plan your OU structure to take full advantage of GPO inheritance. Remember not to plan too deep because every GPO that must be applied to a client uses more system resources. Remember also that you can block the inheritance of a GPO linked to a parent or set a No Override option that prevents child objects from blocking or overriding GPOs inherited from a parent. You can also prevent GPOs from affecting certain objects by filtering with permissions.

Humongous Insurance s corporate headquarters is in Los Angeles, California. In addi tion to its primary location, Humongous Insurance also has major corporate offices in Buffalo, New York, and in Dallas, Texas. There are also hundreds of branch offices in cities throughout all fifty states. All three main corporate offices have a fully staffed IT department that is responsible for maintaining its own network structure. The corpo rate headquarters in Los Angeles maintains the executive IT staff, which is ultimately responsible for all decisions and directives concerning the network. The IT staff in Los Angeles also provides support for branch offices.
Network Infrastructure
The Buffalo, Dallas, and Los Angeles offices are connected to one another via 1 Mbps frame relay links. Branch offices are connected by a variety of links of different speeds and types. The network is configured as a single domain named humongousinsurance.com. The Buffalo, Dallas, and Los Angeles locations are each configured as their own site, as are each of the branch offices. This decision was made primarily to control replication traf fic across the WAN links.
IT Management
The IT staff in Los Angeles sets structure and policy requirements for the entire network. They are also responsible for directly managing the branch offices. A separate IT staff in Buffalo and one in Dallas manages the networks there. However, the senior IT staff in Los Angeles has the ultimate responsibility for the entire network.

Designing an Administrative Security Structure
Requirements
The IT staff in Los Angeles has set a number of standards that must be followed by all locations. Computer account names for servers must describe the location of the com puter and its function. Computer account names for workstations must describe the user of the computer and the location. Password policies are strict. Passwords must be changed once each month and passwords cannot be reused within 12 months. When the wrong credentials are entered more than five times, the user account is disabled until the user contacts an administrator. The IT staff also wants to use Group Policy to deploy standardized installations of software across the network to certain computers. The staff does not want the users to have to make too many decisions about the installation. Ideally, they would like the installation to be started automatically without requiring the users input.
