The first domain created in a new forest is called the forest root domain, and it holds a special place among domains in the forest. The forest root domain provides the foun dation for the forest structure and namespace. Also, the forest-level administrative groups Enterprise Admins and Schema Admins are located in the forest root domain. Trust relationships between domains are transitive and all authentication between different regional domains flows either through the forest root domain (and is thus the responsi bility of the forest root domain controller) or through specially configured shortcut trusts directly between the regional domains. If there are multiple domains in the same site, but the forest root domain is in a different site, you can create a shortcut trust or you can add a forest root domain controller to the local site to ensure that user authen tication between the domains in the local site can occur even when a WAN link is down.

Running contrary to the model that multimaster replication provides, there are tasks that can be performed only on a particular domain controller. These domain control lers fill what are known as operations masters roles. Operations masters are domain controllers that are assigned to complete certain tasks for a domain or forest; an oper ations master s duties are always specific to the domain or forest, and no other computer is allowed to complete these tasks. The tasks are separated into manageable areas, and because one server is responsible for one task, no other computer can take on that role.

Schema Master The first domain controller in the forest holds the role of the Schema Master and is responsible for maintaining and distributing the schema to the rest of the forest. It maintains a list of all the possible classes of attributes that define the objects found in AD. If the schema needs to be updated or changed, as in the case of installing an application that must make modifications to the classes or attributes within the schema, it must be updated on the Schema Master (that is, the domain controller [DC] serving as the Schema Master must be available), and the update must be performed by a member of the Schema Admins group. If the DC serving as the Schema Master is unavailable and you must make the changes to the schema, then you can move this role to another available DC. Domain Naming Master The domain controller for the forest records the addi tions and deletions of domains to the forest; this operations master is important in maintaining the integrity of the domain. The Domain Naming Master is queried when new domains are added to the forest. Keep in mind that if the Domain Nam ing Master is not available, then new domains cannot be added; however, this role can be moved to another system if necessary. Another important point to remem ber about the Domain Naming Master (in a multiple domain environment) is that it must also be a global catalog server. This is because it queries the global catalog to verify that the creation of any additions to the forest is unique.

These two roles are automatically assigned to the first domain controller in the forest. In a single-domain forest (or in a multiple-domain forest where all domain controllers in the forest root domain host the global catalog), you should leave both the forestwide operations masters roles on the first domain controller that is created in the forest root domain. In a multiple-domain forest where the global catalog is not hosted on all domain controllers, you should move all of the forest-level operations masters roles to a domain controller in the forest root domain that is not designated as a global catalog server.
