While you should remember the requirements listed in the section, Determining Processor Requirements, for the exam, there are other ways to approach processor requirements. As the number of users rise, domain controllers need more pro cessing power. Instead of adding more processors, you can add more processing power. For example, a single 1.6 GHz processor could replace a dual 850 MHz setup; a 3 GHz processor could support as many users as a quad 850 MHz setup. Although multi-processor systems offer the advantage of being able to service more requests simultaneously, this benefit often does not outweigh the costs of using multiple processors. Systems that use multiple processors normally cost more than systems that use a single, more powerful processor. Also, some software is licensed based on the number of processors in a system.

As with processor requirements, the amount of disk space required by a domain controller is mostly based on the number of users in the domain. To determine the disk requirements for a domain controller, consider the following:

The drive that contains the Active Directory database (NTDS.dit) requires at least 400 MB of storage for every 1,000 users. This covers the space needed for the DNS partition. The drive that contains the Active Directory transaction log files requires at least 500 MB of disk space. The drive that holds the SYSVOL shared folder also requires at least 500 MB of disk space. The drive that holds the Windows Server 2003 operating system files needs around 2 GB of disk space.

Once you have figured out the minimum disk space requirements for your domain controllers, you must then provide extra disk space on the domain controllers that will host a global catalog. If a forest contains only one domain, designating a domain controller as a global catalog server does not increase the database size. However, if a forest contains more than one domain, each additional domain adds approximately 50 percent of its own database size to the global catalog.

Once again, users are the primary determinant for the amount of memory a domain controller requires. To determine the memory requirements for a domain controller, consider the following:
If there are fewer than 500 users, the domain controller requires 512 MB of memory. If there are between 500 and 1,000 users, the domain controller requires 1 GB of memory. If there are more than 1,000 users, the domain controller requires 2 GB of memory.
Microsoft offers a utility called the Active Directory Sizer Tool, which lets you esti mate the hardware required for deploying Active Directory based on the number of users, domain information, and site topology of your network. You can find the tool at http:// www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/tools/sizer/default.asp. Even though the tool is designed for Windows 2000, it is still a useful tool for estimating hardware requirements for Windows Server 2003.

Planning Domain Controllers

Practice: Planning Domain Controllers
In this practice, you design the placement of domain controllers and global catalog servers for Northwind Traders. If you are unable to answer a question, review the les son materials and try the question again. You can find answers to the questions in the Questions and Answers section at the end of this chapter.
Scenario
Northwind Traders manufactures a line of network appliances designed to help com panies improve their data transmission capabilities. Northwind Traders currently uses a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 master domain model. In recent years, the company has undergone significant growth and expansion. The company expects substantial growth during the next three years, including growth in market share, revenue, and number of employees. In addition to opening two new offices, the executive management has committed to implementing a new Windows Server 2003 Active Directory design to meet the current and future needs of the company. The geographic layout of the Northwind network is shown below. The IT staff at the corporate headquarters in Paris anticipate performing a good deal of searches on the information that will be contained within the Active Directory database. They have made this claim based on the amount of time spent searching the current master domain model for various resources and account information. In addition, there are quite a few representatives from regional offices who roam the Paris headquarters. They will need to log on easily in Paris and any other locations that they visit.
