Being able to perform a search query does not prove that content indexing actually works. If an error has occurred with the indexing service, the indexed content could be weeks out of date. In this practice, you will run a diagnostic test against a mailbox server to verify that content indexing is functioning properly. To complete this practice, perform the following steps: 1. Log on to the computer that you installed Exchange Server 2007 on with the Kim Akers user account. 2. From the Administrative Tools menu, open the Services console. Scroll down and verify that the Microsoft Exchange Search Indexer service is started. 3. View the properties of the Microsoft Exchange Search Indexer service by doubleclicking it from the list in the Services console. Verify that the service start-up type is set to Automatic. Click OK to close the service properties. 4. To verify that Full Text Search is enabled on each mailbox database on the server, enter the command Get-MailboxDatabase | ft Property Name,IndexEnabled. 5. To test that Kim Akers s mailbox is indexing newly arrived content, enter the command Test-ExchangeSearch Identity "Kim_Akers". 6. Verify that the output matches that displayed in Figure 8-18.

E-mail address policies ensure that SMTP addresses are configured in a consistent manner. Policies utilize user account properties, such as first name, middle name, last name, and display name. It is possible to specify a preexisting accepted domain only as an address suffix. The SMTP address dictated by the policy will be the recipient s default reply-to address. Address lists allow you to create small specific lists of addresses based on recipient properties. Custom OABs are based on existing address lists. Address lists are regenerated on a periodic basis, though it is possible to force them to be updated. OABs are generated on a specific mailbox server. The time at which the OAB is regenerated can be customized. Out-of-office options are used to determine whether a user s out-of-office message is transmitted beyond the boundaries of the organization. Out-of-office options can be configured on a per-remote-domain level, including the default remote domain, or on an individual mailbox level. Mobile device policies are applied to users. These policies are known as Exchange ActiveSync mailbox policies. You can configure these policies to allow only devices that are fully compliant to perform synchronization with Exchange. You can block or allow access to Windows File Servers and/or SharePoint servers within your organization. You can also configure device password policies and recoverability settings. Several tools, such as the Test-ExchangeSearch cmdlet, can be used to verify that new and existing content is being properly indexed by Exchange Search. It is also possible to disable Exchange Search on a per-mailbox-database basis.
