The first step in analyzing statistics and using the results obtained to check and maintain mailbox health is to filter the output of commands based on the Get-MailboxStatistics cmdlet. For example, if you wanted information about the disconnected mailboxes in the database First Glasgow Mailbox Database in the storage group First Storage Group, you can use the following command:

Comparison operators
9 discussed the comparison operators -ne, -eq, -ge, and so on. For more information, refer to Table 9-2 in that chapter.
In a production environment, mailbox sizes are typically in the gigabyte range. However, on your test network, they are much smaller. If, therefore, you want to identify all the mailboxes on the Exchange Server 2007 server Glasgow with sizes greater than or equal to 1 MB, you can use the following command:
Get-MailboxStatistics -Server "Glasgow" | Where {$_.TotalItemSize -ge 1MB} | Format-List
Figure 10-24 shows the output from this command.
Figure 10-24 Mailbox statistics filtered by total item size
In addition, in a production environment, the number of items in a mailbox is typically in the thousands but is much lower in your test network. If, therefore, you want
Lesson 2: Monitoring Client Connectivity
to identify all the mailboxes on the Exchange Server 2007 server Glasgow with an item count greater than or equal to 25, you can use the following command:
Get-MailboxStatistics -Server "Glasgow" | Where {$_.ItemCount -ge 25} | Format-List
Figure 10-25 shows the output from this command.
Figure 10-25 Mailbox statistics filtered by item count
You can also filter by, for example, last log-on and log-off times, storage limit status, and whether users Active Directory accounts are valid or not valid. You can redirect the output of commands based on the Get-MailboxStatistics cmdlet to CSV files and open these files with data analysis and report generation applications, for example, Microsoft Access or SQL Server. You can also use the data in applications such as Microsoft Excel that can display it in graphical form. As always, gathering data is relatively straightforward. Analyzing the data you gather and using statistics to monitor client connectivity is more difficult, and you will learn to do this mainly through experience. If, for example, a user reports that she has not received any new e-mail messages for some time, you can look at the last log-in time statistic and make a conclusion about whether connectivity is an issue. Quotas are frequently an issue. If a user cannot receive or send e-mail, you can look at that user s StorageLimitStatus statistic and determine whether the problem is quota related. If, on the other hand, a Mailbox server is experiencing problems, you can analyze mailbox sizes and determine whether storage limits are or could become a problem. You might then need to enforce stricter quotas, implement an archive policy, or persuade management that a hardware upgrade is required.

Quick Check Answer
Viewing Perfmon Counters
9 introduced the Exchange Server Performance Monitor and discussed how the System Monitor component of this tool can be used to view performance counters in real time and to view counter logs that in turn enable you to generate baseline statistics that monitor general server health and issues such as mailbox health and queue thresholds. The chapter also discussed how you can use the Performance Logs and Alerts component of the tool to add counters to logs and how you can set alerts that warn you if values in counters exceed or fall below predefined threshold levels. You used these tools and techniques to monitor queue thresholds, which are one indicator of mailbox and Exchange organization health, and to monitor the general health and resource usage of the four main server subsystems: processor, memory, disk, and network interface.
