10 discussed the Message Tracking ExTRA tool in detail. You can use this tool to specify a user as a sender or a recipient and determine the e-mail messages that the user submitted or received. Note that the SEND EventID specifies only messages sent to an external Exchange organization and does not list the user s internal mail. You can specify all messages received or submitted within a time period, or you can uncheck the Start and End checkboxes to specify all messages that meet the other criteria. You can specify EventID, MessageID, InternalMessageID, and Reference. If subject message tracking is enabled, you can also specify a text string to search for in message subjects. Figure 11-19 lists all the messages submitted by sender Don Hall. In a production environment, you would see a lot more messages and would need to filter by other parameters to make the information usable.

You can use the Message Tracking tool if all you require is to find a message or to list messages on your screen. However, the tool is limited and does not let you extract the data it gathers in a form suitable for more detailed reports. Exchange Management Shell, however, lets you redirect output to a file and, in particular, generate CSV files that can be read by other software. For example, the following command returns details of all messages received by Don Hall and stores the information in a CSV file:

You can filter your results in the Exchange Management Shell command, although it is often easier to do this in the report generation software that reads the CSV file. For example, the following command returns all messages submitted for sending by Keith

Reporting
Harris that have Kim in the Subject line and stores this information in the file C:\KeithSubjectKim.csv:
Get-MessageTrackingLog -Sender keith.harris@tailspintoys.internal -EventID SUBMIT -MessageSubject "Kim" | Export-Csv C:\KeithSubjectKim.csv -Notype
You can analyze the CSV file to return information about the number of messages submitted or received by a user, the messages sent between two dates and times, the total size of all messages submitted or received, and details of messages that exceed a predefined size. By using different values for the EventID parameter, you can list, for example, messages for which delivery failed or was delayed, messages for which delivery status notification was generated, messages that cannot be delivered or returned, or messages that were put in the poison message queue. Table 10-1 in 10 lists the various values that the EventID parameter can take.
Creating Mailbox Reports
MOM 2005 SP1 generates the Mailbox Size Exceptions, Exchange Mailboxes, Top 100 Mailboxes (by size), and Highest Growth Mailboxes reports. These are standard reports, and you can use the tool to configure reports that give you other information. However, if you do not have this tool in your organization or if you want more detailed and flexible reports, you can use Exchange Management Shell commands based on the Get-MailboxStatistics cmdlet. You can pipe the output from these commands into the Format-List command if you want to see them listed in detail in the Exchange Management Shell console or into a command based on the Export-Csv cmdlet to capture the results in a CSV file for report generation. For example, if you wanted a report that gave details of all disconnected mailboxes on the mailbox server Glasgow, you could use the following command:
Get-MailboxStatistics Server Glasgow | Where {$_.DisconnectDate -ne $null} | Export-Csv C:\DisconnectedMailboxes.csv -Notype
Figure 11-21 shows part of the CSV file that this command creates. As before, this file is displayed in a spreadsheet (Excel) for clarity, but if you want to, you can open it with Notepad.
