The Microsoft Exchange Search Indexer service (MSExchangeSearch) enables users to perform full-text searches of documents and attachments in messages. The search index data for a specific mailbox database is stored in a catalog data directory in the same location as the database files. Figure 12-3 shows the catalog data directories associated with the First Storage Group on the mailbox server Glasgow.

A catalog directory name follows the convention CatalogData-<guid>-<guid> where the first <guid> is the globally unique identifier (GUID) of the database, and the second <guid> represents the Instance GUID, which is used in the clustered scenario to distinguish between the nodes. It is possible to back up the catalog directories by specifying their paths and performing a file backup. However, the search index can become unsynchronized with the database after recovery if transaction log files are played into the recovered database. Typically, you would not back up or restore catalog directories but instead rebuild the search index catalog after a restore. To do this, stop the Microsoft Exchange Search service, delete the old catalog, and then restart the service. This action forces the server to re-create the search index catalog.

The offline address book (OAB) is stored by default on a mailbox server in a folder in the file path C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\ExchangeOAB. Replicas of the OAB are distributed to Microsoft Outlook clients to enable clients to look up address book requests without having to connect to an Exchange server. If an Exchange organization uses public folders to store OAB information, this information is stored in the public folder database and on mailbox and Client Access servers. In this case, the OAB is replicated as part of public folder replication and is backed up during public folder backup. If public folders are not used, OAB information is generated by the Availability and Autodiscover services. 4, Public Folders, discusses the generation and storage of OAB information.

Public folder replication
Currently, a series of informative articles by Neil Hobson about troubleshooting public folder replication are available on the Microsoft Exchange Team Blog (You Had Me At EHLO) at http:// msexchangeteam.com/archive/2006/01/17/417611.aspx, http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2006/01/ 19/417737.aspx, and http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2006/01/23/417974.aspx.
If, however, you are using Web distribution, such as Outlook Web Access (OWA), you need to back up and restore the OAB file on your server. This is a file backup and is not Exchange aware, so you need to specify the path to the OAB information separately as part of your backup job, as shown in Figure 12-4.
NOTE
Backing up OAB on Client Access servers
You can also back up the C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\OAB directory on Client Access servers that contain the local cached copy of the OAB f iles. This action is not essential, but doing so makes it unnecessary to replicate all the OAB f iles from the mailbox server when the Client Access server is brought back online after disaster recovery and saves time when recovering a Client Access server.

Backing up an OAB
You can also save the registry settings on a mailbox server by backing up System State data as part of your backup job or by exporting the following registry keys to files:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SYSTEM\currentcontrolset\Services
Figure 12-5 shows the export of the first of these keys.

Table 12-1 summarizes the data on a mailbox server and how you back it up. You carry out an online streaming backup of Exchange database files and transaction log files in the practice session later in this lesson.
