Deleted mailbox retention enables you to recover mailboxes after they have been removed (or disconnected) without needing to restore them from backup. By default, Exchange Server 2007 retains disconnected mailboxes for 30 days after deletion, and mailbox recovery must occur during the retention period. You recover a deleted mailbox within the retention period by using either Exchange Management Shell or Exchange Management Console. To list the deleted (or disconnected) mailboxes in the dumpster on the mailbox server Glasgow and the dates on which they were deleted, you enter the following command in Exchange Management Shell:

You recover a disconnected a mailbox by connecting it to a user account. In this example, the account Mark Harrington has been created in Active Directory but does not have an associated mailbox. You can check whether this user account exists and is not disabled by entering the following command:

Configuring Disaster Recovery
Figure 12-25 Mailboxes in the mailbox dumpster
To reconnect a disconnected mailbox in the First Glasgow Mailbox Database in the First Storage Group to user Mark Harrington when the user object exists in Active Directory directory service and has no associated mailbox, run the following command:
Connect-Mailbox -Database "First Glasgow Mailbox Database" -Identity "Mark Harrington" User "Mark Harrington"
If you have a number of disconnected mailboxes in a mailbox database, you can attempt to reconnect all of them with a single command, such as the following:
Get-MailboxStatistics -Database "Glasgow\first storage group\mailbox database" | where {$_.disconnectdate -ne $null} | ForEach {connect-mailbox -id $_.mailboxguid -database "Glasgow\first storage group\mailbox database"}
This command works for disconnected mailboxes that have equivalent Active Directory user accounts that are not associated with mailboxes. You can also use Exchange Management Console to connect a disconnected mailbox. As with using Exchange Management Shell, a user account that does not have an associated mailbox needs to exist in Active Directory so that you can connect the mailbox to it. In Exchange Management Console, expand Recipient Configuration in the console tree and click Disconnected Mailbox. If required, click Connect To Server in the Actions pane to specify the mailbox server that holds the disconnected mailbox. Rightclick the mailbox you want to connect and click Connect, as shown in Figure 12-26. Follow the steps in the Connect Mailbox Wizard.

Configuring the Mailbox Retention Period
You can use Exchange Management Shell or Exchange Management Console to configure the deleted mailbox retention period. If, for example, you wanted to change the mailbox retention time to 20 days for mailboxes in the database Mailbox Database in the storage group First Storage Group on the mailbox server Glasgow, you would enter the following command in Exchange Management Shell:
Set-MailboxDatabase "Glasgow\First Storage Group\Mailbox Database" -MailboxRetention 20.00:00:00
Exam Tip
Note the format for the retention period. If you see an answer in the 70-236 examination that, for example, gives a retention time of 15.00.00.00 or 30:00:00:00, that answer is wrong.
To use Exchange Management Console to configure the deleted mailbox retention period, expand Server Configuration in the console tree and select Mailbox. On the Database Management tab in the work pane, expand the storage group that contains the mailbox database that you want to configure, right-click the database, and select Properties. You can specify the mailbox retention period on the Limits tab. Figure 12-24 earlier in this lesson shows this dialog box tab.
