to re-create the failed cluster node and join it to the existing cluster using the Cluster Administrator tool. More detail about applying high availability solutions to Exchange Server 2007 are covered in the second lesson of this chapter. Once the cluster has been re-created, you should ensure that all the necessary components required for a mailbox server are installed, and then you should run Exchange setup to install the passive Mailbox server role on the computer. Once the passive Mailbox server role has been successfully installed, run the following command from the command prompt:

This command should be run from the \Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\bin directory of the reinstalled passive mailbox server. If using cluster continuous replication, you will then need to enable replication and reseed the replica database. This process is covered in more detail in Lesson 2. If you are restoring a mailbox server that uses single copy cluster, the storage groups and mailbox databases will already be present on the shared storage device.

The practice in this section is optional and time consuming because it essentially involves installing the Hub Transport server role on a second computer twice. You should perform this practice only if you have access to the necessary hardware to host a second Exchange server. If you are using Microsoft Virtual Machine software, you will need enough RAM on the host computer to run both the existing and the new virtual machine simultaneously.

Practice 1: Installing and Recovering a Hub Transport Server
In this practice, you will install an extra Hub Transport server into the Tailspin Toys organization. You will then create a duplicate of that server to simulate server recovery. The steps provided in this practice are of a general nature, as you will have already completed many of them in earlier practices. To complete this practice, perform the following steps: 1. Configure a Windows Server 2003 64-bit edition computer as a member of the TailspinToys.Internal domain. Name this computer RoleRecovery. Use only a single volume to host the operating system and make a note of the volume s size.
Lesson 1: Recovering Exchange Server Roles
2. Ensure that Windows PowerShell and Microsoft .NET Framework version 2.0 or later are installed on the server. 3. Install the Hub Transport server role on the computer using the Exchange Server 2007 installation routine. Do not install any other Exchange Server roles on this computer. 4. Once the installation routine completes, open Exchange Management Console on the Exchange Server that you have been performing your practice exercises on. Verify that the Hub Transport server RoleRecovery is present in the list of servers when the Hub Transport node is selected under Server Configuration. 5. Shut down the server named RoleRecovery. Format the hard disk drive. 6. Reset the computer account named RoleRecovery using Active Directory Users and Computers on the TailspinToys.Internal domain controller. 7. Install Windows Server 2003 on the newly formatted computer. Assign the computer the name RoleRecovery. Install Windows PowerShell and Microsoft .NET Framework version 2.0 or later and then rejoin the server to the domain. 8. Instead of using Exchange s GUI installer, open a command prompt and change to the directory hosting the Exchange Server 2007 installation media. 9. Issue the command Setup /m:RecoverServer from the command prompt. 10. Once the recover routine completes, open Exchange Management Console on the Exchange Server that you have been performing your practice exercises on. Verify that the Hub Transport server RoleRecovery is present in the list of servers when the Hub Transport node is selected under Server Configuration.
Lesson Summary
The easiest way to recover a failed server is to use Setup /m:RecoverServer. You can use this command successfully only if you have rebuilt a copy of the failed server that uses the same volume configuration and has the same name, you have reset the computer s Active Directory account, the server has the necessary role required components, and you have joined the replacement to the domain. When restoring a Client Access server, remember to reinstall any custom SSL certificates. If you are using a custom IIS virtual directory configuration, it may be necessary to manually re-create that after you have performed the role recovery process. All important Hub Transport data is stored in Active Directory, and this is the most straightforward Exchange server role to recover using Setup /m:RecoverServer.
