You can use the Get-PublicFolder and Set-PublicFolder cmdlets to get and set public folder information that is not mail related to e-mail. If, however, you want to get or set mail-related information, you need to use the Get-MailPublicFolder and Set-MailPublicFolder cmdlets, described in the next section of this lesson.

folder in addition to being able to post messages. A message posted in a public folder appears in the folder, and any user who can view the folder can read the message. An e-mail message posted to a public folder can be forwarded to the folder owner. Anyone who knows a public folder s e-mail address can (unless specifically blocked) send an e-mail message to the public folder, while only users with appropriate permissions can post to it. A mail-enabled folder has an object in the Active Directory directory service that stores its e-mail address, address book name, and other mail-related attributes.

Exchange Management Shell provides a set of cmdlets that you use specifically to mail-enable public folders and to perform operations on mail-enabled public folders. You need to create a public folder before you can mail-enable it.

Exam Tip Because you can create, for example, a mailbox-enabled user or a mail-enabled universal distribution group with a single operation, it is easy to forget that you need to create a public folder and then to mail-enable it. Beware of answers to examination questions that specify that a single command creates and mail-enables a public folder.
You can enable, disable, and configure mail-enabled public folders and obtain information about them by using the following cmdlets:
Enable-MailPublicFolder
Mail-enables an existing public folder, for example, Enable-MailPublicFolder \ Accounts. You mail-enable a public folder in the practice session later in this lesson.
Lesson 1: Configuring Public Folders
Disable-MailPublicFolder
Mail-disables a public folder, for example, DisableMailPublicFolder \ Accounts. The public folder is not removed, but users can no longer send e-mail to it. You disable a public folder in the practice session later in this lesson.
Set-MailPublicFolder Configures the mail-related settings of mail-enabled public folders, for example, Set-MailPublicFolder \ Accounts -PrimarySmtpAddress AccountInfo@tailspintoys.internal MaxReceiveSize 1000. Figure 4-6 shows this command being used to configure a mail-enabled public folder called Accounts.
Figure 4-6 Configuring a mail-enabled public folder
NOTE
Configuring a primary e-mail address
By default, the primary e-mail address for a public folder is set through e-mail address policy. If you want to use the PrimarySmtpAddress parameter to change this, you must f irst set the EmailAddressPolicyEnabled parameter to False, for example, Set-MailPublicFolder \Accounts EmailAddressPolicyEnabled $False.
Get-MailPublicFolder
Returns mail-related information about mail-enabled public folders, for example, Get-MailPublicFolder \Accounts. Used without an Identity parameter, the cmdlet returns information about all public folders. Returns statistical information about the mailenabled public folders in a specified mailbox, such as the number and size of items in the folder and the folder name, for example, Get-MailboxFolderStatistics -Identity tailspintoys\Kim_Akers. Figure 4-7 shows some of the output from this command.

Quick Check
You want to get information about the top-level public folder Human Resources and all public folders in its hierarchy. What command do you use Get-PublicFolder \Human Resources Recurse (or Get-PublicFolder Identity \Human Resources Recurse).
Quick Check Answer
Using Cmdlets to Configure Public Folder Databases
You can use Exchange Management Shell to create, configure, remove, and get information about public folder databases. Creating a public folder database is one of the few operations that you can also carry out by using Exchange Management Console. You do this in the practice session later in this lesson.
NOTE
Using Exchange Management Console
You can perform public folder database management tasks in Exchange Management Console. Database management tasks, such as creating or removing a database, are the only public folder tasks that can be performed in Exchange Management Console. All other public folder management tasks are performed in Exchange Management Shell.
You need to be a domain administrator or a local administrator on the Exchange Server 2003 server or be added to at least the Exchange Server Administrator role to create configure or remove public folder databases. You can view public folder database settings if
