Report Server Configuration Manager allows configuration for most of the SSRS settings. Many of these settings, such as setting the connection to the report server catalog and the encryption keys, can also be controlled through a set of command-line utilities. In fact, setting up a scale-out deployment model for SSRS involves sharing encryption keys between instances pointed to the same report server database and can be done either through Reporting Services Configuration Manager or through the command line. In addition to configuring the report server catalog connection and managing the encryption keys, the report server also contains several server-level properties that are set through SSMS and through the RSReportServer.config XML file, such as device-specific rendering settings and Internet deployment. This lesson covers these advanced configuration methods and settings.

The installation of the SSRS server component includes three administration command-line utilities to assist in configuring SSRS server settings. The RSConfig.exe utility assists in managing the SSRS instance connection to the repository database. The RSKeyMgmt.exe utility assists in the management of the encryption keys for operations such as backup, restore, and create. Last, the RS.exe command-line utility assists in the Microsoft .NET scripting of report management operations.

The RSConfig.exe command-line utility manages the connection and settings for the SSRS instance, mainly to manage the repository database connection, but also to set up the default credentials for report execution against databases. The RSConfig.exe command parameters define the connection to the SSRS instance and then define the database connection to the Report Server database.

Note that quotation marks are necessary if the values for any of the parameters in Tables 13-1 through 13-5 contain a space. Also note that you can precede the parameters with either the forward slash character (/) or the hyphen character (-).
Configuring and Administering the SSRS Server
Last, the RSConfig.exe command-line utility can be used to define the credentials that are used for unattended report execution. An unattended report might be triggered by a Reporting Services event, such as a scheduled report. Use the parameter described in Table 13-3 with RSConfig.exe to define the account to be used.
