In this lab, you will explore the performance counters and event logging capabilities of WCF. Exercise Enable and View Performance Counters In this exercise, you will configure one of the applications created earlier in the chapter (specifically, from Lesson 2) to update performance counters. 1. Navigate to the <InstallHome>/6/Lesson4/Exercise1/<language>/Before directory and double-click the Exercise1.sln file to open the solution in Visual Studio. The solution consists of two projects. They are as follows: The DemoService project, a simple WCF service library that implements the IContact interface. This interface consists of a single method (UpdatePhone) that would (theoretically) update a data store with a new phone number. For this exercise, it simply emits the new number into the Trace subsystem. The TestClient project, a Console application that enables you to consume the DemoService service. It prompts for user input. Before the performance counters can be viewed, they must be enabled through the configuration file.

2. In Solution Explorer, double-click the app.config file in the DemoService project. The diagnostics element is where you enable the counters. This element includes a performanceCounters attribute that can be set to limit the performance counter values that are updated. 3. For this exercise, enable all of them by adding the following XML to the system.serviceModel element in the configuration file:
<diagnostics performanceCounters="All" />
Prior to running the application, none of the performance counters associated with this instance will be visible. However, after the application is running, you can view them through the Performance Monitor application. 4. To launch the performance monitor application, click the Start button, enter Perfmon in the Start Search text box, and then click the Perfmon.exe item that appears in the search list. In the left pane, expand Monitoring Tools and click Performance Monitor. In Performance Monitor, you might want to delete the existing counters just to clear up the display. Regardless, you can add a couple of counters associated with the service. 5. Click the Add button or press Ctrl + I to add a counter. 6. In the Add Counters dialog box, (shown in Figure 6-12), find and select ServiceModelEndpoint 3.0.0.0 from the list of available counters on the local computer.

7. If the WCF service is running, one or more instances will appear in the instance list on the right of the form. Only one instance should be visible. The name starts with updateservice. Click it.
Lesson 4: Monitoring WCF
8. In the available counter list, click the down-arrow to the right of the ServiceModelEndpoint 3.0.0.0 counter. This displays a list of the counters that belong to this group. 9. Click the Calls counter, and then click the Add button. Click the Calls Duration counter and again click the Add button. This adds the two counters to the monitor display. 10. Click Close. 11. In Visual Studio, make sure TestClient is set as the startup project, and then launch the application by pressing F5. 12. In the Console window for the application, type a 10-digit number that doesn t start with 0 or 1, and then press Enter. In Performance Monitor, the number of calls should increase by one, and the Calls Duration value should increase slightly. This latter might not happen, however, because the lowest granularity for the counter is one thousandth of a second. 13. Stop running the application. 14. In Solution Explorer, double-click the UpdateService file. To see the impact on the Calls Duration counter, a slight delay will be added to the service s operation. 15. In the UpdatePhone method, add the following line of code:
' VB System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(2000) // C# System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(2000);
16. Launch the application by pressing F5. 17. In the console window for the application, enter a 10-digit number that doesn t start with 0 or 1. 18. In Performance Monitor, select the Calls Duration counter. Notice that the last value is slightly greater than two seconds, which is the delay just introduced into the operation.
