Bruce Johnson The first time I had a chance to use WCF in a real application was in 2005. Prior to working with WCF, I had spent time working with Web services, .NET remoting, and COM+, so I was well aware of the fun associated with getting two applications to talk to one another in a meaningful manner that is, using methods that would stand up to the scrutiny of people whose goal in life was to point out problems with the security and reliability of my applications. (That would be auditors, for those of you unfamiliar with the process.) The application I was working on was required to be able to change the protocol used to send messages between different processes, on the fly. At the time, the choice was to write multiple channels manually or to try WCF, which was then a very new technology. My surprise at the result still lingers with me. It was easy to call remote methods through a proxy. This was quite familiar from the Web services and .NET remoting technologies. What was very different was that to switch from one protocol to another required nothing more than changing a couple of characters in the configuration file. This was stunning to me, all the more so because it just worked. Now, this is not to say that you have complete freedom to use any transport channel in any situation, but the ability to use configuration elements to make significant changes to the underlying technology was quite new. And very, very powerful. Keep a sense of just how magical the results are as you go through the details of how to configure your client in this chapter.

Lesson 1: Configuring the Client Endpoint
One of the main concepts of configuring a WCF service is that the service contains a set of endpoints. Each endpoint can reference a set of endpoint behaviors. Each endpoint can reference a predefined binding configuration. Also, the service can reference a set of service behaviors. All this functionality can be expressed using XML. The configuration of a client endpoint is not that different from configuring a service endpoint. The client has a set of endpoints with which it can communicate. Each endpoint is associated with a binding, and each endpoint can have one or more behaviors. The difference, naturally, is that the client won t support service behaviors. Instead, the client has the ability to define callback behaviors. However, this last piece is not configurable through a configuration file and so is not within the scope of this chapter.
After this lesson, you will be able to: Create the client endpoint either declaratively or imperatively. Modify the details of the binding through behaviors. Change how the client behaves, with respect to both requests and callbacks. Estimated lesson time: 50 minutes
