Description Generates trace data related to the authentication and authorization mechanism used within WCF. Creates traces related to the activation of the service portion of a WCF communication channel. Provides tracing information when objects are serialized or deserialized. Because this activity occurs quite often in WCF, this set of tracing information is useful for seeing some of the raw content associated with messages. Generates trace messages associated with accessing the interface to the Common Log File System (CLFS). Generates trace messages related to any CardSpace identity processing that occurs within the context of a WCF application.

CardSpace is a piece of software that runs as a client application. It enables users to provide a digital identity securely to online services. When a user needs to be identified to a Web site or Web service, CardSpace displays a list of information cards from which the user can select. The chosen identity is then transmitted to the Web site or service. You can find more details about CardSpace at http://netfx3.com/content/WindowsCardspaceHome.aspx.
Setting the Trace Level
One piece of functionality provided by tracing in .NET is the ability to define levels of messages. Each trace message that is produced can be associated with a specific level. Listeners can be configured to process only messages that are at or above a certain level. A number of tracing levels, described in Table 6-2, are included in the .NET Framework.
Table 6-2
Supported Tracing Levels
Description All trace messages are ignored. Unexpected processing events or unhandled exceptions have occurred. The expectation is that the application will terminate immediately or shortly thereafter. An unexpected processing event or exception has occurred. However, unlike the critical level, the application is still capable of continuing its processing.

Table 6-2
Supported Tracing Levels
Description This type of trace message indicates that a possible problem has occurred. The application is functioning correctly, but that state (the state of correctness ) might not continue. This is the first tracing level that is positive in nature. It indicates the passing of successful milestones within the application. This is similar to the Information level in that the messages are supposed to indicate milestones within the application. However, the Verbose level is expected to provide more of these types of messages than the Information level, specifically at a more granular level of milestone. Messages generated for this level of source tracing are related to the flow of messages between components and the activities related to these messages. Included in messages at this level is sufficient information to enable correlation across various service boundaries. All messages are captured, regardless of the tracing level.
Trace Level Warning
Information Verbose
ActivityTracing
Because the listeners use the concept of above, the levels in Table 6-2 are listed in order from highest to lowest in terms of importance. For the levels between Critical and Verbose, inclusive, messages from the higher levels are also included when the lower levels are indicated. For example, if you specify a tracing level of Information, all Critical, Error, Warning, and Information messages are included. Exam Tip
It is expected that the lower the level of tracing you specify, the more messages are generated. For a level such as Verbose, the number of messages created could be quite significant. If you include ActivityTracing, remember that the number of messages has the potential to affect the performance of the application negatively.
You indicate the trace level by setting the switchValue attribute for the trace source. The following sample from a configuration file shows how the messages generated by the System.ServiceModel trace source will be filtered so that all Information-level (and higher) messages, as well as the ActivityTracing messages, are processed:
<system.diagnostics> <sources> <source name="System.ServiceModel" switchValue="Information, ActivityTracing"> <listeners> <add name="xml" /> </listeners> </source> </sources> </system.diagnostics>
