Contacts will use a name and an e-mail address. If they synchronize with a mobile device, they are likely to include other information, such as a phone number. The first tab that appears when you open a new contact is the Name And E-Mail tab, shown in Figure 9-16. In this tab, it is possible to enter name and title information, as well as e-mail address details. If you enter multiple e-mail addresses, you can select a preferred e-mail address by selecting one and clicking Set Preferred. It is also possible to associate a picture with a contact on this tab. If you have a picture of the person, you can associate it with the contact. This feature is especially useful for people who are good with faces but not so good at remembering names! If you have a Windows Mobile phone, you might take a picture of someone you meet at a conference using the phone s camera and add it to that person s contact information using the phone s Contacts utility. When you synchronize with Windows Vista, this picture appears as part of that person s contact information.

Importing and Exporting Contacts
The Import and Export buttons are available on the Windows Contacts toolbar. Windows Contacts supports four formats for importing address data, as shown in Figure 9-17. CSV files are comma-delimited files that can be opened in a text editor or Microsoft Excel. If you are attempting to import contacts from Outlook Express, you would choose the Windows Address Book File format. In corporate environments, Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) servers are often used to store contact information. The LDAP Data Interchange Format (LDIF) import format is used to support LDAP. vCards are slightly different from the other formats in that they usually contain only the contact information of a single person. vCard files are similar to digital business cards, and some people have them automatically attached to their outgoing e-mail.
Figure 9-17
You can import data into Windows Contacts from four formats
You can export data from Windows Contacts using only two formats, CSV and vCards. When you perform an export, all your contacts are exported. You should export using the CSV format when you want the person with whom you are sharing your contacts to have access to all of your contacts. You should export using the vCard format when you want to be more selective about which contacts you want to share. Exporting using vCard format will provide you with a folder full of vCards, one for each contact. You then copy the ones you want to share and give them to the person you want to share them with. It is not possible to export a group contact to CSV or vCard format.
