Typically, you want to restore to the last restore point. In this case, you click Next and then click Finish to confirm the restore point and close the wizard. A computer restart is needed to complete the system restore process System restore points are created automatically on a daily basis and also just before updates, applications, and device drivers are installed. If, however, you intend to make changes that might affect the system, it is a good idea to first create a system restore point manually. To do this, you access the System Protection tab of the System Properties dialog box as before, select the hard disk or disks on which you want to create system restore points (you should always select the disk where system files are located typically the C drive; you might also choose to specify other disks where important files are stored), click Apply, and then click Create. Figure 12-28 shows the System Properties dialog box with a hard disk selected and the Create button enabled.

You click Create in the System Properties dialog box, give the restore point a name, and then click Create in the System Protection dialog box to create the restore point. Restore points are saved until the hard disk space that System Restore reserves is filled up. System Restore reserves 300 MB of hard disk space initially and might use up to 15 percent of hard disk capacity. When the reserved hard disk space has been used up, System Restore will delete the oldest restore points to make room for new ones. Shadow copies are automatically saved as part of a restore point in System Properties. If System Protection is turned on, Windows automatically creates shadow copies of files that have been modified since the last restore point was made.

In enterprise systems where user files are held on file servers rather than on client computers, you can schedule when shadow copies are created. On a computer running Windows Vista in a SOHO, shadow copies of user files that have changed since the last restore point are created with the next restore point. Typically, this happens around about the middle of the day so if you create backups every night, you should always have a previous version of a frequently modified file that is only a few hours old. For more information about scheduling shadow copies on servers, access http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsServer/en/library/4a10eb9b-611e-4a3f-a20b-9b2f8722cc171033 .mspx mfr=true.
If you turn off System Protection on a disk, all restore points are deleted from that disk. When you turn System Protection back on, new restore points are created. System Protection is enabled by default. To turn off System Protection for a hard disk, access the System Protection tab of the System Properties dialog box as before and clear the check box next to the disk. In the System Protection dialog box, click Turn System Restore Off.
NOTE
System Restore limitations
System Restore is not intended for backing up personal files, so it cannot help you recover a personal file that has been deleted or damaged (although a shadow copy of that file might have been saved when a restore point was created). System Restore does not work on hard disks with a capacity of less than 1 GB.
Using Complete PC Backup
Windows Complete PC Backup creates a backup image, which contains copies of your programs, system settings, and files. The backup image is then stored in a separate location from the original programs, settings, and files. You can use this backup image to restore the contents of a computer if a hard disk or computer ever stops working. A Complete PC backup enables you to restore your OS and any other files to the state that existed when the complete PC backup was made. You should create a Windows Complete PC Backup image when you install Windows Vista. If the computer has more than one partition, the backup will typically include all files and programs on all partitions. Microsoft recommends creating a new Windows Complete PC Backup image every six months. You can save the backup image to a disk on which Windows Vista is not installed. You should also keep a backup on an external disk or on a set of CD-R, CD-RW, or DVD rewritable disks.
